Climbing up a cliff as fast as you can, without ropes, is a sport in the same way that Russian roulette is.
antsays...How do we know it is not filmed on the ground? [grin]
Vastatiosays...FYI, Mr Dan Osman is dead.

scottishmartialartssays...It's only a 5.7 climb so the actual difficulty isn't bad at all. When I was still really into climbing I easily could've climbed something like that without falling, in fact I probably still could. Even still, I never would've free climbed that. Not worth dying over some extremely small mistake.

RIP Dan Osman, but I think that makes my point pretty nicely.
Snappysays...Just watching such vids give me the butterflies ... *gulp*
sillmasays...Dag, people choose their sports, and I'm sure he was quite aware of the risk of death involved. Just let people have fun the way they want to, as long as it doesn't involve breaking laws(some bending is now and then ok . Altho I draw the line somewhere too, for example the Dirty Sanches or something show on MTV, it's something like Jackass but worse, is complete and utter idiocy.

therealblankmansays...From Wikipedia: "He died on November 23, 1998 at the age of 35 after his rope failed while performing a "controlled free-fall" jump from the Leaning Tower rock formation in Yosemite National Park. The failure was investigated by the National Park Service with assistance from Chris Harmston, Quality Assurance Manager at Black Diamond Equipment. Harmston concluded that a change in jump site angle probably caused the ropes to cross and entangle, leading to the rope cutting by melting.[2] Miles Daisher, who was with Osman when he made the jump, stated that the ropes used in his fatal jump had been exposed to inclement weather — including rain and snow — for more than a month before the fatal jump, but that the same ropes were used for several shorter jumps on the previous and same day, THIS WAS SAID TO BE HIS LAST JUMP BEFORE HE RETIRED"... Yes, yes it was.
Morganthsays...What really sucks is that he was actually using ropes when he died.
