Faux News/Norton Antivirus fail

Stay classy Fox.
vairetubesays...

The fact they still think Norton will solve more problems than it causes... Oh, hell, most people buy into the antivirus scam.

Antivirus subscription = biggest waste of money next to subscription online games... at least you can play the games.

There's a pretty big difference between Fox News Channel the the affiliates?

If the Death Star had affiliate Death Stars, is it somehow different to work on one of the affiliates? They all take their marching orders from the same folks…

^ What exactly do you mean by "antivirus scam"?

Most people, particularly those that don't use P2P or torrents and browse only well known sites have absolutely no need for anti-virus/trojan programs. Especially costly subscription ones when there free variants that will quell any latent paranoia.

Wrong. You can get viruses from websites. My Wordpress blog and three friends' sites were hacked and used to propagate viruses.

If you're going to use a PC[*], please use an antivirus program; free or otherwise.

[*] PC is here defined as "computer running Windows". If you are a Linux user or Mac user, you are, of course, smarmily resistant to these pests and can skip running AV software for the time being, ya smarmy bastards.

Do you think that Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes concern themselves with affiliates?

I dated a girl who worked as a reporter and weekend anchor at a Fox affiliate station for a couple years. The station manager had complete creative freedom when it came to content.

Actually yes, yes I do. What's the point of being king if you can't exert your influence over your kingdom?

Um - virus' and trojans have appeared on ipods, music players and other hardware. Visiting hi-jacked websites can also infect you. (at my old work an art reference site was hijacked, giving me an afternoon of scanning and deleting malware...over 100 items in total) Anyone who thinks that anti-virus software is a 'scam' is headed under 'toothpaste is a lie devised by dentists in order to make you spend money'.

Free anti-virus is better than none, but its not as good as most subscription based systems.

Best way to infect someone, hijack a website and run the script. Also jpeg's can and have been known to hide virus' and with the increase in the MAC's user base, it too is starting to come under attack.

If you don't have any anti-virus then you are crippling everyone else, as a zombie pc is used to infect others.
(And no, there is no obvious way of knowing without scanning)

the 'macs don't get viruses' is a load of bollocks. You are less likely, granted, but not immune.

Only reason I asked about the antivirus scam comment was ro clarify the myths people have about viruses and how you get them on your computer and other devices. But it seems others have beat me to the punch. I work for Symantec and supported Norton Antivirus for 2 years. I now support their corporate antivirus products. The new version of NAV/NIS is actually pretty good compared to the older versions. I use it at home when before I would only use the corporate version on my computers. Very small footprint and very non-intrusive. Believe it or not, they actually do listen to customers concerns and complaints about the software and work to make it better or less of a burden on your system.

Norton Antivirus IS a virus. Most of you probably know that already, but for those who don't consider this a helpful public service announcement.

Unfortunately, this is a 2 year old article and things with the program have changed since this was written. The author is uninformed at best. And his points are pretty much ignorant.

"disgusting services activated and eating your computer resources." AND "You're NOT PROTECTED AGAINST THE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE PROBLEMS THAT AWAIT YOU!! ACTIVATE THE TRIAL"

Is this guy serious with this shit?

Grossly inaccurate. Neither NAV nor NIS tries to scare you into subscribing or re-subscribing. It simply lets you know the subscription is up and you should renew or you will not be protected. The reason the alert was put in there was because it didn't used to warn you and people were getting infected. Guess who suggested we add the warning to the program? THE CUSTOMERS!

Also, if you don't register the trial. Simply uninstall it. What kind of idiot would leave it on the system to take up resources if it's not a fully functional program. IE; you didn't choose to pay for the subscription when the trial is up?

why is this a fail? can someone explain please. also, i have never had anything but hassles with nortons. the viruses i have had were not prevented by nortons.the two times i got serious viruses i had to format and start over, even wih nortons installed. so what was the point of nortons?? my previous comps networks were constantly seen by nortons as some kind of invasion and the program argued with my computers about it ) crashes ensued. i have had no anti virus for the last 3 years with no problems. i do use superspyware remover and spybot. they are the most useful.
for me nortons has always been worse than useless as it caused more damage than good.
