How many other people have gone through this? More than you would ever want to know, but the truth is that the majority of local police are not crooked and are actually driven by the desire to protect the public. People like this need to be bounced out of the force, but only as long as these kinds of cases aren't used to make the case for federalization of law enforcement which is just another step toward *real* fascism in this country.

What really bothers me is the worst they will probably get is kicked off the force. Their punishment should be worse because they are abusing power. Unlawful policing should be a much much more serious crime.

Police need to be held to higher standards than normal citizens. Their punishments should be correspondingly harsher.

My philosophy is that a policeman's job is to oppress a person. A more accurate anti-orwellion slogan is to serve by oppression. I'm not against police in general, they're a vital and necessary function of society. We need to appoint people to stop those that are violating others rights. But being realistic a policeman has more rights than you do. And the biggest problem within that is having their self importance come ahead of their job. The best policeman recognize their purpose in protecting those they come across.
