Extras Christmas Special - Gervais on Celebrity

Ricky Gervais's monologue on what he considers wrong with modern celebrity starts at around 2:00.

Oh my god. I love Gervais, love him. Even though I can't actually watch an entire episode of The Office or Extras due to the cringe factor, I love the man. His observations and humour are so spot on.

And then this... man, respect just got even higher for the man. I do love a comedian who can switch to real heartfelt truth every now and again, it speaks to a depth... we'll see so much more from this man, not just comedy, but things of real depth.

Bravo.

Interesting that this has been edited from the original BBC version I watched.

Katie Couric = Kate Adie
American Idol = X Factor

They have obviously dubbed this version to be more understandable to an American audience. That kind of pandering to American tastes displeases me.

Relax, Dag! It's just about knowing your audience. If people don't get the jokes because of a foreign cultural reference, they aren't going to laugh, and then they aren't going to watch anymore. You can still enjoy your BBC version!

Perhaps part of the reason that the US is so inwardly focused is that they have things like this spoon-fed.

Shows have to be changed to appeal to the American audience instead of the American audience trying to wrap their minds around another culture.

This is a petty example - but I think it holds true in many other cases as well.
