"Excuse my outrage, but I think it's justified."

He had the power to prevent the war with a word. Who else has that kind of power? [/yt]

Sort of, but it wasn't a minor edict - it was kind of the main point of Jesus' teachings. They are called Christians, supposedly followers of Christ - not bibleists.

Isn't "turn the other cheek" cherry-picking as well? Religion is a tool, tool. Always has been.

More to the point people seem to think turning the other cheek is about saying "hit me again!" It's not, it's about understanding why someone lashed out in the first place, and it's a fundamental part of international relations. You never get anywhere just going back at a state unless you simple decimate them, and usually they didn't deserve that. You get places when you address legitimate grievances, or try at least to understand why they're pissed off.

Being a reactionary piece of shit does not solve any problems. Everyone was on our side after 9/11 and what we did was work HARD the last decade making sure that as many people as possible can hate us. It's mindbogglingly stupid, and it will result in future attacks.

So they choose to follow some portions of the Bible, and not others? There's a word... can't think of it at the moment... that describes just that. Ummm... I keep seeing fruit, like tiny apples, for some reason... oh, goshdarnit!

You missed my point I think. Cherry picking means that you pick one little particular thing and follow it. Jesus' whole schtick was love thy neighbour. So it's not so much cherry picking as ignoring Christ all together.

...from the source material in question;

Matthew 5:38-40
New International Version (NIV)
Eye for Eye

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

...and...

Matthew 22:36-40
New International Version (NIV)

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

...so, it may be cherry picking, but those are the cherries they were specifically directed to pick.

I'm not sure, but the rules only seem to apply when dealing with those within your religion. Aren't those of other religions or anyone trying to leave yours usually, historically marked for death?

"2 of the most brutal invasions the world has ever seen"

... this guy has apparently never heard of D-Day, Korea, or Vietnam. Brutal invasions is what we do.

I think he overestimates the power the Pope has over American Catholics.

In the particular instance of Iraq, the Pope neither initiated violence nor did he tell anyone else to do so. In fact, "In 2003, he once again opposed a war in Iraq and appealed to U.S. President George W. Bush to refrain from going to war." It didn't persuade Bush and I doubt it would have persuaded the general Catholic population of military personnel to go AWOL even if he had expressed his dissent more emphatically.
