Listen there young'n these were ripped off of StarCraft over a decade ago when there were tons of custom maps. I am reasonably sure that's where the craze started. Though if anyone knows of an RTS that did it before, I am willing to concede.

Is it just me, or isn't defense tower fun because of how low needs it is to play? If you are just plunking around on the net, you throw up some DT to keep your mind rolling. Doesn't this just miss the point, or have I

I think Rampart was actually the first Tower Defense game. It was an arcade game that was released about 8 years before Starcraft.
