dystopianfuturetodaysays...Brilliant.
spoco2says...EXACTLY! But noooo, every word is GOSPEL, every word is THE WORD OF OUR LORD.
Except that even the 'words of our lord' have been rewritten by Romans and kings as he said.
Just... it is staggering to think that people can read that book and then suggest that we must live by those words exactly...

It started two thousand years ago. The bible itself is a joke.

thinker247says...Oh, it's much more than 2000 years. It's at least 4000 of Earth's 6000 years of existence.

Actually you have a good point. This was ACTUALLY the set up to a joke, but the set up itself is pretty funny. The only clips from this routine I could find were short and out of context.
ryanbennittsays...Just wait til the next prophet comes along, he'll have all the punchlines...

Hmmm, that's the best you could come up with eh?
Hit a bit too close to home perhaps?
Sketchsays...Shit, I've used that Telephone line recently! He's stealing my material!
deathcowsays...1. write book
2. repeatedly re-translate
3. ????
4. prophet!!!
rychansays...I actually think his criticism is a little unfair. Maybe it's been too long since I've been in the bible belt, but the biblical analysis that I see on Wikipedia (which is very interesting) often goes back to the first known source in the likely language of authorship. It's neat to read about:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authors_of_the_Bible
Oldest known New Testament text fragment:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rylands_Library_Papyrus_P52
Opus_Moderandisays...Precisely. As I said to the naked man in the street, "I thought it would be longer."

Please don't bother me with the facts! My own mythology will do nicely, thank you.

But, what he says is true. The bible has indeed been rewritten and translated (not very well in all cases) and altered over time. Kings, Queens, Emperors etc. all threw their hand in to 'tweak' the bible and try to make their version be the 'real' one.
Reading things like this show just how much people get in a twist as to which version of the bible is the true version. People spend their lives believing the WORD OF THE BIBLE without necessarily knowing even what version of the bible they are basing their beliefs off.
It's all ridiculous. Sure read the damn thing, but use your own mind and sense to take from it what you will, don't then treat every word in that thing as FACT and IRREFUTABLE. Because they are most certainly not.
