Customer Service In Japan . . . Wait for it

I was visiting Tokyo like 15 years ago, and me and my friend were in the subway looking at the maps - probably coming off as a bit confused. And then this old Japanese lady hobbles up to us and asks, in rough English, if we needed any help. Those people are amazing.

Most people press the assistance button because the machine ate their train card (happened to me once). That guy is back there to unjam stuck cards, replenish change (if it runs out), empty the cash when the machine gets full, etc.

It's not on camera, but there's a ticket window right by the ticket gates where you can go to ask questions about how best to get to your destination, and the guy at the window can usually also provide tickets. But whether the window guy knows any English or not is kind of a crap shoot depending where in Japan you happen to be.
