Civil forfeiture. Seriously?

Can they really do that? What this video is saying is that the police can just walk into a place, look around, decide they like it and take it. Seriously?

America is screwed, I'm just waiting till they do this over here in England too...

Ah yes, The local law enforcement in the US - A place where the thugs congregate.
I thought this was common knowledge. When every town out there runs it's own police force, there is bound to be abuse of the system.

Just ask the Duke boys, Boss Hog ran the police, and Roscoe Purvis Coltrane was the most crooked Sheriff out there - and you'all thought that was fiction.

Assuming this motel is a giant den of iniquity, I get why the local government would want to shut it down. And I could see where the local community might be fine with that. But why wouldn't they just revoke their business license?

Even if the police get the property, they're just going to turn around and sell it. And there is nothing to stop the new owners from re-opening the motel, and operating it in the same way. In that case, there would be no benefit for the community at large - just a giant payday for the police.

This is nuts.

Yep we need more Federal control. Greedy capitalist pig family. Paying workers near nothing so they can become rich. Those kind of people make me sick. Hope the Feds stop this before they become a Hilton or Howard Johnson.

Welcome to America where the poor stay poor and those who try to make a better life have their shit stolen by the FEDS.

This should be in *lies

According to local newspaper 9 people were arrested in four incidents there in one weekend.

.0005% of 125,000 is .625 so in one weekend more people were arrested at the motel than they claim have EVER been arrested there in this video. A quick search of the local paper (http://tewksbury.patch.com/) for "Motel Caswell" turns up dozens of incidents where people have been arrested, just this year.

It sounds like the place is a total drug/prostitution den and the police are tired of coming out there every five minutes to arrest people.

Because of the blatant lies in this video I cannot trust anything else they say.

I don't actually care about the motels reputation for prostitution and drug dealing (according to Trip Advisor), I don't actually care if 0.625, or 62.5 (most likely, these guys sound probably forgot that you need to multiply by 100 to get a percentage), 625, or 6250 people have been arrested in the last 20 years. Hell, I don't actually care if EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS GUESTS has been arrested.

The point is that this is sloppy policing. If they want to get the guy on negligence, get him on that, if they want to try for aiding and abetting, try for that, but in the absence of actually conviction him of something (or successfully suing him in civil court) this is wrong.

I actually kind of think that the point of the law was the governments equivalent of suing an individual for negligence, but really, it still needs to go through the court because otherwise it's ripe for abuse.

I'm unconvinced that this guy is an angel, but the law still makes me angry, and I support what IJ is trying to do.
