Chris Dudley Fights Oregon's Elite Waitress Class

Sagemindsays...

I hate tipping, Sure I'll tip if it's called for.
Tipping is a great way of rewarding those who go above and beyond.

But I think the US system is broken and needs fixing of some kind.
When the system is built so that the waiter/waitress gets paid the lowest wage possible by the employer and the customer is forced to tip whether they deserve it or not to offset the lack of wages, there is a major problem. That's called a surcharge, not a tip.

I don't know what this guy is proposing, there is no information in this video. It's all subjective on the peoples reactions not what they are reacting to because he never mentions wage reduction in the clip.

Maybe instead of sowing decent, someone needs to sit down and talk to this guy, maybe he has some real ideas. And maybe he doesn't, because like I said, we don't really get a chance to listen to him.

As well...,
(using the example at the bottom from the post on YouTube)

If someone's wage is 30% wage and 60-70% Tips, brings up their income level to a decent level, they no longer make minimum wage.

1). The government is getting shafted on the income tax (someone call the IRS)
2). I say: pay the servers the proper wage they deserve, cut out the mandatory tip and raise the food prices to compensate.

This way, the servers get paid a fair wage, the customer isn't forced to tip for bad service and the people pay taxes based on their income true levels so they start paying like the rest of society.
The servers still get the option to be tipped above and beyond, only now they have to work for it.

Also on that note, I'm not sure how this works in the US, but here in Western Canada, all tips go into a single jar and get divided equally amongst the entire server/kitchen staff at the end of each night.

QUOTES FROM YOUTUBE:
"when I was a server I pocketed $100 per 6hour shift on average, plus my hourly wage. So when you look at it 2 dollars an hour I am still pulling in 112 dollars for 6 hours of work that's not to shabby." - nicholaswells

"Thank you for giving us a real life example, Nicholas. $112/6 hours = $18.67 per hour. I encourage anyone who wants to heartily disagree with Dudley on this issue, but I am sick of hearing that waiter/esses make minimum wage; they do NOT. I recall my days in high school when the girls held the waitress jobs at our national chain pizza restaurant. I made $3.50/hour; they made $9/hour ($2 from the employer.) They did NOT received minimum wage--I did. - euroboardgames "

yes, waitresses are so wealthy that they must be stopped at all costs, in the name of decency and in the interests of preserving the status quo. Let's pay them the slave wages they deserve. Meanwhile we can heap status and wealth on those who do this country such a great service - the corporate elite.

Like Frisk said.

Minimum wage kills jobs. Basic supply and demand.
If you set a fixed price, you throw of equilibrium which results in a shortage i.e. unemployment

My former employer and friend had to close his small business because his mandatory license fees doubled and minimum wage rose just two bucks in two years.

He employed 8 people and barely broke even each month.

The 24% wage increase cost him an extra 5,000 a year.

Can't say the same for corporations tho.
Walmart's minimum wage should be at least 8 or 9 with all the money they save twisting producers arms & using slave labor.

Make tipping illegal, raise minimum wages.

gwiz665says...

@GenjiKilpatrick Yeah, obviously to actually make it work, you need more than just the two things I recommended. Only doing those things, would be too drastic and too half-assed.

I have a long-winded argument about this, but I'm halfway in bed so I can't really form it cogently, I will add this though, in Denmark (aka socialist paradise containing the "happiest people on earth") we have a minimum wage of about $16-17 and it works quite well for small businesses.

Both in the US and here in Western Canada (all of Canada of course) tips and gratuities are taxable income and it is the responsibility of the recipient to keep track of how much they receive and report them on their tax returns. Consequently the government is not getting shafted out of income taxes by waiters/waitresses any more than by any other occupation.>> ^Sagemind:

Really? Are we being that naïve? I know many waiters/waitresses/bartenders. They report nowhere near what they make in tips. This is one of the upsides of the job. When you deal in cash, you get to screw the government.>> ^nanrod:

Out of curiosity, what was your friend/employer's business?

Also, if he was employing that many people, it's almost certain that he owned a corporation. You can't get workers comp as a sole proprietor & you don't have limited liability.>> ^GenjiKilpatrick:

Quick service pizzeria. It was an LLC.

The seventh and eighth employees were him and his girlfriend, the manager.

I love how they are running this ZOMG he's trying to lower minimum wage campaign against this guy.

Most states DO have a lower than minimum wage for people earning primarily tips. In many states it is like $2/hr or something. So it's not unreasonable that they do this. Waitstaff probably is making like $15/hr compared to the cooks who DO make minimum wage. And the real issue is that it is all tax-free or like 60%-80% of the tips go unreported, depending on how much is in cash.

Your pizzaria guy is just a jerk. Yes minimum wage did go up, do he is paying more.. But in reality he was paying way too little for like 10 years. So, yes minimum wage goes up in step functions while cost of living and inflation go up linearly. So for like 5 years min wage employees are getting screwed and for like 2 or 3 years employers are paying more than "usual". But no, jerkoff pizza guy didn't magically have to shell out extra thousands of dollars. (which is probably like 1/2 the profit from a few weeks)

GenjiKilpatricksays...

Shut your filthy fuckin' mouth. You're a complete and utter asshole, whatever the fuck your actual name is.

Don't assume you know a goddamn thing about me or my friend.

He's probably the most kind-hearted and forgiving person I've met and I WON'T have your sorry ass make a mockery of all his hard work and generosity.

His only wish was to own a small business.

Tho since the no-good lyin' sack of shit that sold the pizzeria to him falsified documents, he was unaware the income was overstated until the first quarter was up.

By then, she had disappeared.

He sacrificed sleep, his performance at his day job, and his sanity to keep his investment afloat.

Most months he was lucky to break even.

He took out a second mortgage on his house.
Sunk in $300,000 in additional loans over 4 years.
Exhausted all his resources and back ups.
Yet never saw a goddamn cent in return.

Despite ALL of this, he still paid me well over minimum wage for a year and a half.
Right out of his own pocket essentially

So next time, before you go mount your sure-as-shit high horse of righteousness.

Make certain you know what the FUCK you're talkin' about, alright.
