What people have a problem with isn't helping out -- it's being the first person to start helping out. Mob violence is just one end of the mass action spectrum. People can also tacitly agree not to do something together that they ought to.

One very real reason for not getting involved? Threats of litigation. "You" step in, things aren't what they seem (the kid was lying and being an a-hole) and now you're being sued for attempted kidnapping or child endangerment or anything else the bastards can make up.

Even if you eventually are vindicated, how many thousands of dollars might it take to clear your name?

They could name the girl, "Civil Liberties".

Studies have shown abductees are more driven (to escaping) and proactive (about escaping) and are more thoughtful and respectful (of the people training guns on them).
