EDDsays...Let's see, we can add the 8th channel via comments, is that right, SiftBot? Because this needs *travel for Sydney!
Paybacksays...Ok, the "War of the Worlds" feel gantry cranes moving around at 0:45 was upvote. Plus the detail on that tugboat model was... oh, right...

siftbotsays...Promoting this video back to the front page; last published Sunday, June 14th, 2009 10:49am PDT - promote requested by eric3579.
rychansays...He got to film from a gantry crane, how cool! I don't know about you guys, but ship yards have enormous nerd appeal to me. So many cool toys.
EndAllsays...Awesome. Music wasn't as good this time around though.
messengersays...Abuse of the wide angle blur effect, especially when things that were closer were more out of focus than things that were further away.
Excellent realistic full-scale water effects. Can't imagine how that was done.
Lame music.
ReverendTedsays...Did anyone else imagine the tug captain at the end yelling "CRAP! I'M NOT UNHOOKED YET! GUYS! HEY!"
Also, messenger - I can't tell, was that sarcasm?
jetakosays...@messenger- That is full-scale water.
messengersays...Ahh. Right. Then the only thing I was really impressed by he didn't even do.
I don't get the point of the thing. What's the use of making something real look like miniatures which are supposed to look like the real thing? That's about as useful as making a photorealistic painting from a photo and ending up with the same result.
rychansays...Messenger,
1) The narrow depth of field makes the scenes look like realistic miniatures (because when imaging small things up close, it's hard to make the aperture small enough to create a large depth of field). There's no circularity or degeneracy.
2) The point is that when you change the perceived scale of a scene (both spatial and temporal in this case), it creates a drastically different perception of the scene (even though it's really the same photons for the most part).
pmkierstsays...Well, messenger, because you can, of course.
It is clever and a truly wonderful deception of our perception; it is also a very poignant illustration of how our perception lies to us and how it is based on assumptions based on past experiences. It is *extremely* difficult to overcome some of those judgments that we make; no matter how much we "know", we are so accustomed to associating photography of miniatures with a certain look that we cannot see anything with that look as anything but a miniature. Pretty fascinating, and a pleasing aesthetic to illustrate it.
Croccydilesays...This guy needs to keep them coming, all of his tiltshift videos are beautiful.
Much like the whole problem with the abuse of HDR photography, there are quite a few badly done tiltshift videos where the format is not used well artistically or inappropriately.
I envy the patience required to set these shots up...
