....drive through ATM? What laziness was this invention borne of?

This is new to you? We have them in Canada, too and they have been around for about 15 years. Pretty nice when it is -20 out and it allows you to get to your destination more efficiently. How do you think people got to an ATM otherwise? Do you think if it wasn't a drive through that they would have walked to the bank?

Every two minutes you idle your car, you use around a kilometre of gas. As most people are within about a 1/2 km of their bank, using a drive through ATM ultimately doubles their round trip.

The weird thing about that stat is that at 30 km/h you also go 1 km every two minutes. So apparently idling uses just as much fuel as driving slowly!

If it really wants to make me smile it would start spitting out twenties that were not deducted from my account.

We dont have them in Australia.
ATM's are conveniently placed around shopping centres, or the bank, or in a bar, or failing that...most places that do EFTPOS allow you to withdraw cash with purchase.

Drive through ATM's have no place here.

I find this whole discussion fascinating. First, I would like to point out that my original reaction was to the statement "This is why you have an obesity problem, America.". I highly doubt that it is just because of a drive-through ATMs and I find that statement too flippant. I am in Canada, and I think we have an obesity problem, too, just probably not as bad as the folks down south. I think the core problem is diet and exercise.

Second, and again speaking only for Edmonton, Alberta, there aren't hundreds of these things around. I know of 2 drive-through ATMs in the whole south-west area of the city, and they are specifically at the large bank branches. They exist, there just aren't everywhere. The only people probably using them are folks that bank at that bank.

Third, as charliem mentioned, we also have hundreds of these mini-ATMs around everywhere. They are very convenient, but they come with a $1-3 transaction fee on top. Most of my transactions are with credit/debit cards, so cash is pretty rare. When I need it, I don't feel like handing out extra monies to 3rd parties. If I need some cash I will probably go to the bank near my house that has this drive-through. I doubt parking my car and going inside to the ATM will help me lose weight

It was more a comment on lazyness in general, which has direct relations to sedentary, and therfore obese lifestyles, than one pointing directly to these drive through ATM's as the sole cause of overweight people......
