16 oz bottles of soda were to share with three people

Oh my. About 36-43% of America is now obese depending on how you measure it...and this, during the time of COVID, when obesity significantly increases the risk of death.

Advertisement isn't just about awareness. It's about changing behavior and habits---

In the 1960s 6.5 oz (192 mls) Coke bottles were the norm (you can buy the antique soda dispensers--. The Obesity Rate for Americans ran between 10 and 15% (men lower).

12oz bottles then became normalized---one presumes, for sharing

In this advertisement, this is a 16 oz (473 mls) which became the norm until the 90s when 20 oz (591 mls) took over.

For reference--a 12oz can of coke contains 39 grams of sugar. The max recommended daily free sugar intake for an adult is about 30 grams.

Now, people commonly drink a 20 ounce as a single serving.

The biggest road cup at 7-Eleven is now 100 ounces.

We're doomed.

(yes, you can make allowances for ice...but...all that sugar surely also helps account for how obesity went from 10-15% to 2X -- 3X...)

Included in "Drugs" because: Sugar is sort of a drug.

My body's doing it wrong.
From age 16-35 I drank nothing but Coke unless it wasn't available (Coke, no Pepsi). Between 5-12 a day! Somehow I remained rail thin (probably cycling). Around 35 I decided that was going to kill me if I didn't stop, so I did and switched to lower calorie natural sodas, juices, coffee, and teas.....now I'm fat. Go figure.
At least I didn't give myself diabetes....although I can't explain how.

Oddly enough, no....but the tea and coffee still supplied more than enough.

My kidneys definitely feel better now, not clogged with syrup.

I remember when the 16oz first came out.
They looked huge and it was quite a luxury to buy one for I think 25 cents back in the day.
There was nothing about it being meant to share with 3 people though that I can recall.
Back in those days as kids we did pass it amongst ourselves if someone felt generous.
