Why Tipping Should Be Banned

xxovercastxx says...

One of the ugly side-effects of tipping that I didn't see mentioned above (though I didn't read all the comments), is that the waiter/waitress get pegged for anything that's wrong.

Meal cooked wrong? Bad food? It comes out of the tip. The chef still gets his/her full check even though they're at fault.

My current car is a 2013 Jetta but I realized from that photo you linked to that I am looking in the wrong place. In the video, I got the impression they were showing the low fuel warning light and I saw nothing when I looked at mine. The little icon on the gauge itself does have a triangle pointing to the right, however.

I searched for gauge cluster pics of my prior VWs (2003 Golf and 2000 Beetle) and they did not have the icon. My mom's Ford probably does have it and I never noticed. My dad's Toyota might be just a year or two too old.

The rest were definitely too old. It looks like this is something that's been added in the last 5 years for most of these makes.

My 2006 Mazda 6 has it, and so does every other recent car I've driven.

I don't remember my 1976 Corolla having an arrow though, and images from the 70s don't show it either.

This image from a 2006 Camry shows the arrow pointing to the side the fuel hose goes - http://goo.gl/fa9dxx so maybe it's only in the last 10 years? Is your car older than that?

I've never seen this on any of the 5 cars I've owned, nor any of my parents' cars (all together that's 1 Honda, 1 Mazda, 3 VWs, 3 Toyotas, 2 Fords, 1 Chevy, 1 BMW, 1 Geo, and 1 Dodge).

Does anyone have this on their own car?

How fracking works

xxovercastxx says...

I'm not endorsing the practice but I will point out that doing it is the only way we'll discover the long term results.

All I'm trying to say is that once something gets tied up in politics, it's near impossible to learn about it. Once it's political, lines are drawn and people take sides and you're either a shill or a hippie.

I'm from a small town in upstate NY in an area where fracking was to really take root. Fortunately (?) it's just been banned. I would have liked to know what the risks are and their likelihood, at least to the best of our knowledge. I'm sure there are people out there who have this information, but I have no way to identify them.

The shills say it's very safe, but I don't trust them at all. The hippies say it's going to kill us all, but they say the same thing about GMOs. I'm sure the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but few people are offering nuanced opinions and I can't assume they're correct just because they are.

I have no way of knowing what's true and what's not and it pisses me off a bit.

I rather feel that that puts the argument in a skewed light. Essentially, we are either in full awareness of the facts and long term results of fracking or we are not. If we are not yet, why on earth would we pursue it now? We have alternative forms of energy production, it's just a whole bunch of very rich people aren't quite done selling us oil yet.

How fracking works

*controversy

Unfortunately fracking has become politicized and so there are no longer any sources of information that can be expected to be honest. It is now just another dichotomy: A completely safe method of resource collection, or a WMD disguised as such.

You can really hear the seeds of Trent's current success with movie soundtracks here.

I never really played the game with the soundtrack in, but I used to throw it in the stereo and play it out the windows on Halloween to scare the shit out of the trick-or-treaters.
