Why Macs Suck

stumblingjon says...

My flatmate has a mac laptop. He bought it around 4 years ago, and i kid you not, it craps itself every six months or so. The mac repair staff always claim its the logic board overheating...
The macs i used for film editing at Uni also would lock up every time i tried to save some new editing.
My frieds macs battery crapped itself by creating a bubble shaped bulge on its battery. That laptop too overheated said the repair staff...
Now, its true that pcs do tend to have more software issues... but the fact that so many mac computers seem to have their hardware screw up so much....
It takes an hour to reload windows onto a pc....
takes two weeks to repair a logic board...

Edward Said on Orientalism

stumblingjon says...

I believe the important aspect you are missing is the fact that many of these Europeans who came to the asian lands came with preconcieved ideas. In my studies, most people of the asian lands did not assume aspects of foreign culture, and then search out evidence in support of it. Also, they changed their ideas of Europeans as history moved on. This is really not the case of Western culture. Ask a westerner what their image of middle eastern culture is, chances are they will give the Indiana Jones answer. When asking an asian the same question about westerners, you will not get an answer painting westerners as they were hundreds of years ago.
This is a good video which supports my comments on the video by Kevin. In his video (along with many others) he constantly hints that the Japanese are a wacky bunch, then proceeds to find only the occasional oddities that are about. He never goes in search to find out why this stereotype exists, nor tries to disprove them. Instead he uses the ideas to plaster his face on youtube and crack a few jokes at the expense of another culture.

Life in Tokyo, Christmas

Having only lived in Japan for around 10 years, Id like you to have a look at the rest of Kevin's videos, if you can. I just get so tired of westerners taking the mickey out of anything that's not seen as normal according to them. Many of my friends and my fiancee have seen his videos and are obviously annoyed at his constant piss taking (rolling eyes and lame sarcasm).
My experience with Japanese television its commentary on foreig oddities is they tend to be a lot more welcoming, full of wonder and interest for what is unusual. Not just cracking a few jokes at a cultures expense to get your face on youtube.

Firstly, I suggest Kevin grab a dictionary and look up the meaning for the word "irony". The greatest irony is the fact his confident use of it constantly is incorrect.
Secondly, I'm so tired of these videos from bohemian wankers which are nothing more than an arrogant laugh at a culture that has no qualms selling or imagining things for consumers which are designed to be a bit of fun.
I have seen his other videos before and am tired of his "isnt Japan a wacky place" spiel. Its a place full of normal people who try to make life a little better by inventing new ways to interact with each other. God knows that the West could do with dash of this in its culture...

The Ring: Samara comes for a visit

stumblingjon says...

Im afraid sadako of the Japanese version is far more frightening. Samara just looks like an angry little brat. She comes out of the TV too quickly, and doesnt have the rickity walk due to her arms and legs being broken by her father as in the original...

Harry Potter as you've never seen him before

equus is such a tragically beautiful play. I give him high respect for shoosing a play with such ditinction. Radcliffe is truly aiming for goals which are far beyond the potter genre, and for that i respect him greatly
