assorted lunatics protesting health care reform

snoozn says...

Hmmm, I guess I need to get re-educated.
Hitler was in favor of a public option to enable people to get health insurance if they were poor, unemployed or had a pre-existing condition.
And Jesus thought uninsured children should be allowed to die in the street.
I did not know that.

8 Year old shooting AR15 to "Protect the second amendment"

snoozn says...

Does the girl say "bunch of Iraqis" in the middle? (As in, that's who she is pretending to shoot)? This is horrible. I'm okay with teaching kids to shoot, even though I would never let my kids do so. But the way this is presented just makes me sad and angry. I think this comes close to being a threat against the president.

Drill baby, drill: An erotic fantasy of Glenn Beck's

snoozn says...

I just had to go to Amazon and see if this was really direct from Beck's book, and indeed it is. He tells the unlikely story of falling completely in love with his sister and announces his intention to leave his wife for her. He says they are going to get sterilized so they will not have a disabled child. He wonders why so many in society see his love for his sister as so wrong. I could only read as far as Amazon's "search inside the book" feature allowed me, so I never got to see if Glenn Beck is really going to marry his sister or if he's simply reaching for a ridiculous analogy about some social issue of the day. The suspense is killing me.

What can an atheist possibly celebrate?

snoozn says...

That was a nice set of clips to refute the "atheists' lives have no meaning" nonsense. But Neil Degrasse Tyson expresses it best. I just love that man. JiggaJonson, send your niece a nice set of Tyson DVD's.

How To Give A Toddler Nightmares For Life

snoozn says...

I'm sure the kid was genuinely scared. Small children doing actual work, such as acting or modeling is probably not a good idea in general. I don't think he'll be permanently scarred or that being exposed to the monsters in this video was any worse than taking a kid to a Halloween party or science fiction convention. As long as a kid doesn't experience anything truly terrible or abusive, I don't think it will have any long term effect.

Kiss the Girl - followup

snoozn says...

I love the fact that the ad that pops up on this page is for a "free Disney vacation planning DVD!" I'm not sure this is the association they really wanted for their vacations. Then again, might convince some people who wouldn't normally be into a Disney vacation.

Craig T. Nelson "I'm going to quit paying my taxes!"

snoozn says...

Wow, could Nelson be any more dense? He clearly doesn't understand the meaning of "taxation without representation" and he completely missed the point of Chayefsky's "Network." Is Howard Beale really his role model here? Really?? And the whole "what other way could little ol' me possibly protest these policies I don't like?" Well, let's see, you're a celebrity, bud! Not a huge one, but you sure can get your opinions out in front of more folks than the rest of us. I may have heard of a celebrity or two who uses their fame to publicize their pet cause. But no, this idea of firing people up to not pay their taxes as a way to show their love for veterans and teachers sounds absolutely brilliant. And does anyone really believe Nelson is going to go through with this and sit in jail as a Republican martyr? Gah, the idiocy level has reached the point that I AM MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE! Oh, sorry, I meant to steal this quote from "Network:"
"[FOX is] not a respectable network. [They're] a whorehouse network, and [they] have to take whatever [they] can get."

Family: We Want Little Hitler Back

snoozn says...

This lovely family was in the news a while back when their local shop refused to make a "Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler" cake for them: http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/today/index.ssf/2008/12/holland_township_family_angry.html
The parents are just horrible on several levels: obviously extreme racist bigots, willing to saddle their kids with a lifetime of pain/teasing/unwanted attention. I don't know just how many parts evil and how many parts stupid.

Even with all that, I doubt it's best for the kids to adopted out to some family they don't even know. Of course if there is some other kind of abuse going on, that changes things. Unfortunately, kids grow up in racist homes all the time and a great many kids grow up with values I don't agree with. Sometimes, the world just is what it is, and you have to hope that little Adolf and his siblings will eventually mature better than their parents and escape this sad and murky existence.

Malfunctioning Dog is actually a Jazz singer

A little bit of information about Asperger Syndrome

snoozn says...

Having Asperger's is no status symbol, just a useful diagnosis for parents, schools etc. One of my daughters has high-functioning autism (which Asperger's is a subset of). These diagnoses do mean that the person has at least average intelligence (as opposed to other forms of autism, which can be associated with low intelligence), but it doesn't mean the person is a genius. Of course the geniuses can be very interesting and get more press. I thought the young man in the video did a good job of describing how his mind works, especially in the social arena. For more on Asperger's I would recommend Daniel Tammet's Born on a Blue Day.

Using a 1960ies modem to dial into the internet

snoozn says...

That old modem tone makes me feel all nostalgic-y. Yeah, I know he wanted to make a point about getting on the new-fangled "internet" with its modern-day "wikipedia," but I was hoping he'd call some ancient server and play "Adventure!"

Lazy Mailman Delivers Mail Just Short Of Kicking It To Door

snoozn says...

The only (somewhat) surprising thing is that he is doing this in public. I worked in the post office in college and packages were routinely slammed around with no care. When I send packages, I pad and secure them with the expectation that they will be thrown and dropped.

Reza Aslan: US War on Terror 'Validated' Jihadists

snoozn says...

I'm sitting here with "How to Win a Cosmic War" right next to me, which I was planning to read after checking out a few videosifts. This short talk is a good intro to his most recent book, which I highly recommend. He not only explains his cosmic war theory, but gives excellent religious history lessons. My brain is not working well enough right now to figure out how to do one of those sift amazon linkie things, but hopefully someone else will come through with that.

And on an unrelated note, Reza Aslan is so cute I just want to grab him and kiss him all over!
