Dick Dale & The Del Tones - "Misirlou" 1963

rustybrooks says...

It's funny, the music seems so dark and almost subversive and there they are with short hair and cute little suits holding their guitars like they're on one of those variety shows with an orchestra that all stand behind those podiums. I will never understand the 50s and early sixties.

Cass Naumann plays black keys only

I admit that I am not as much of a musical scholar as I would like. However, listening to this with my eyes closed I had a thought that appears to work itself out on paper. Using only the black keys is simply a pentatonic scale in Gb major. Musically this is one of the most common scales that there is (it's the predominant scale mode used in blues and quite a bit of rock music)

Dan Bau: Vietnamese Monochord Instrument

rustybrooks says...

She's not controlling the pitch merely by stretching the string. Actually she's getting most of the pitch by hitting harmonics. You can produce these on a guitar, or most other stringed instruments. They are merely points along the string where you can touch a moving string, and change the pitch by adding sort of a standing harmonic wave. The easiest one to hit is one octave and obviously that's right in the middle of the string. On a guitar there are other good places like the 5th and 7th fret.

Still, on a single string, to be able to hit that many notes is quite an accomplishment.

Theremins are analog already I know what you mean though, non-electronic.

It looks like an interesting instrument. Basically there is just one string, and it's plucked, and then the performer touches the string at various places along it's length to produce harmonics. The stick on the right side of the video is attached to the string, and you can increase or decrease tension, either to produce vibrato or to shift the pitch up or down (like a whammy bar on a guitar).

I wonder how hard it is to play.

Worst Movies Ever

The horse sliding under the flatbed trailer was outstanding. It was obviously meant to be cheesy and funny, not serious. Can a parody of an action movie stunt sequence be considered the worst ever?

Maybe, but I don't think so. I have seen some reaaaaaaally bad stunts in indian movies.

There was a mythbusters episode where they hung a small pig from a hook and shot it with all kinds of stuff and various ranges. It never budged. Not saying you're wrong, silvercord, but I'd say being thrown around by being shot is the exception, not the norm.

I belong to a forum about building LCD projectors, and there are several scenese in there which are required test shots (not this scene though. The first that comes to mind is Milla's rejuvenation). Also, for some reason, some scenes from a few kids movies, like, I think, A Bug's Life.

It always surprises me how artists don't work the way I think they would. There is something about the act of certain kinds of creation that I just can hardly imagine, what it's like to be the creator.

David 'Fingerrs' Haynes PWNS A Drum Machine

rustybrooks says...

EZ Drummer is a software package that contains a metric assload of drum samples (gigs and gigs of them). It translates your input and picks the sample to play. There might be, for example, 20 snare samples in a given kit. If you play THIS hard you get sample 15 and if you play ThIs hard you get sample 10, etc. There are sometimes even more than one sample for one velocity level, so that if you do a drum roll or a sequence of hits it doesn't sound like a fake drum machine.

The other big maker of software like that is "Drummer from Hell". They're both quite impressive.
