Thank you for replying the way you did. I think the downside of the internet is that without knowing the intent behind comments, blatantly sexist comments can just come off looking like really sexist comments.

I think the downside of the commenting system here, is that when comments like yours get rotated to the front page, I think they can mis-represent the community to the tens of thousands of visitors who pop in to check it out, each day.

It is off-putting to read comments like that and I would hazard to guess that for a female visitor to come by and see that on the front page, she probably wouldn't bother hanging around. If that happens often enough, it can only be to the detriment of this site. Balance is the only way to greatness.

I heartily apologize that i offended you. I figured that the comment was so blatently sexist that no-one would would take it seriously.

I would ask that you please leave such inflammatory comments out of the Sift. You can only put women on this site off-side by making them here. If it's an attempt at irony, it's not very effective.

Yes it is off-putting to read throw-away comments like that and I would hazard to guess that for a female visitor to come by and see that on the front page, she probably wouldn't bother hanging around. If that happens often enough, it can only be to the detriment of this site. Balance is the only way to greatness.

I knew someone was bound to say something. I agree it can be off-putting, and I never use it, but I couldn't think of a strong enough word for this situation. I feel like other words like bitch, asshole, douchebag, fucker, etc don't have any kick anymore. When this word is used, people know you mean business. And I definitely wanted to mean it when I heard her suggest it would be a good thing if someone killed Obama.

Anyhoo, that being said, I'm all ears for suggestions of other words. I thought about saying bitch, but for the reasons stated above, it didn't have enough punch. I can't think of any other word, gender-neutral or not, that does.

I would ask that you please try to find other ways of expressing your distaste for this woman. That way you won't be putting the women on this site off-side, by using derogatory terms that are commonly used against women.

I can't offer you any alternatives, sorry.

What I did want to offer ,'though, is that the downside of the commenting system here, is that when comments like yours get rotated to the front page, I think they mis-represent the community to the tens of thousands of visitors who pop in to check it out, each day.

Thanks Jonny. I never saw this in the cinemas. I think I was a coupla years under 18 when it showed, so I wasn't able to get in, with the R rating and all. It wasn't banned here, 'tho may have been censored, I can't remember.

In Japan, they like to make sure their trains are FULL!

persephone says...

Yep, this is old. In the last 10 years, in Osaka at least, pushing on trains has become unacceptable, with signs everywhere telling people to stop it.

I used to do a 60 minute commute on the Hirakata sen and it was pretty bad, standing absolutely jam-packed the whole way. One night I was summoning up the courage to deck some guy for doing this slow humping kinda thing on my behind, except I couldn't twist around to see who it was, least of all get my elbow ready for the jab. Then when the train half-emptied at the next stop and all that was left was this very drunk guy, who with all the swaying of the train, was doing a very loose-hipped kind of lurch, eyes shut, half-unconscious I forgave him for the action on my person.

The Business of Being Born

Q Where is the safest place for a woman to give birth?
A Where she feels safest.

Based on my experience, the safest place for me, is with a skilled midwife, using every natural method available.

Drug-induced labour, mile-long fetal monitor strips, bright lights and nurses telling you to get back on the bed, do nothing to reassure, empower or calm a nervous first-time, but otherwise healthy and normally presenting woman in labour.

I don't blame the nurses. Theirs is one of the most political jobs around. Ask any hospital midwife and they'll tell you they get the most job satisfaction between the hours of 10 pm and 7 am, when the obstetricians are all safely tucked in their beds.

The Porn Industry

I don't need to point out the merits of this clip. Anyone with a scrap of awareness about what the porn industry is all about, gets this clip. It has a great message, unless you're so enamoured of your porn that you can't see the forest for the trees.

Eyes Wide Shut teaser

When our daughter was 18 months old, we moved to a town where we had no friends, family or baby-sitter and we wanted to see this movie. It was showing at the drive-in, so we figured that it would be ok to take her, because she'd fall asleep on the way. When we arrived, they wouldn't let us in, because we had a minor with us and it was rated R.

A while later when it came out on DVD, we finally got to see it and we realised we needn't have caused such a fuss at the gates-it wasn't worth it, afterall.

I did like the orgy scene, 'tho. That's always been a fantasy of mine.
