Time-lapse of American seizure of indigenous land, 1776-1893

mentality says...

Yeah, it's great isn't it? The American people trusted their government, and in turn gained great wealth and land. Of course the indigenous people suffered, but they weren't citizens in the first place.

So in summary, bobknight33 tells us to trust our government, because they do great things for us.

Dave Chappelle is Just 7 Years Late to Work

mentality says...

Saw him live last year in Montreal. Absolutely hilarious. Seemed like he really enjoyed his work too; he took an extra ~20 minutes at the end of the show just chatting with the audience. Got the feeling back then that he was in some financial difficulties. From this interview too, it seems like a large part of him regrets not sticking with his show for the money.

Also, I think you are misinterpreting the GRRM quote about killing perceived heroes of the series once they become popular.

First of all, the Red Viper and Ned stark were introduced and killed in the same book. Their deaths were planned all along and served the story. They didn't have a chance to become popular with the fans before they died. It only feels that way because you are watching a tv adapation of the books.

Secondly, the MOST POPULAR candidates for the heroes of the series are still alive as of book 5. There is one prevailing theory based on plenty of hints GRRM scattered throughout his books on who the real heroes of the story are, and so far the books have been consistent. Of course, that does not mean they will survive the series ending.

GRRM has specifically stated that he does not want the books to become like the TV series Lost, where the writers actively tried to outwit reader speculation. GRRM said he wanted to strike a balance between giving the readers what they want, and maintaining some element of surprise.

So in summary, I don't think GRRM is killing characters unfairly just because they're popular. In retrospect, I like the series even more because so few books leave such a lasting impact on me.

Yeah, I know. I hated it when Joffrey and Lysa died too. Why does he always kill the likable characters? So predictable

Lilithia said:

My reaction was: "Okay, that's it. I'm done with this show. I'll never watch Game of Thrones again and I'll never read the books, because the plot has gotten too repetitive and therefore extremely annoying!1 It continuously uses the same pattern over and over again. Why should I bother watching the show if I know that every interesting and/or likable character (except Tyrion) will face certain death at the next best opportunity (George R.R. Martin said so himself, but I didn't expect him to do this every damn time) just as a means to shock the audience/readership and an attempt to make the plot seem unpredictable. But you know what? If you kill off the most likable and interesting character(s) every season/novel, this is very predictable. It's just lazy and unimaginative storytelling."

That's why I had already expected this to happen, although I really hoped it wouldn't, not only because I liked the character, but because this pattern is really starting to get old. Therefore, I just found it severely annoying, since it seemed so predictable and repetitive. However, I have come to terms with this outcome since then and I'll most probably keep watching the show, but I may never get invested in any character's fate again, because it can be easily predicted.

1I'm not usually one to stop watching a show for any reason, except if it's really badly written and executed, and even then I give it at least several episodes to make up my mind. So I'm not one of those who say "If [insert character name] dies, I'll stop watching the show."

Probably because PA's humor is more juvenile and videogame related? It's impressive what they did with PAX and Gabe's art has really improved over the years, but TED is really not their audience.

Transgender woman dares Councilman to stone her

mentality says...

What you're saying is not relevant. She is directly quoting Leviticus 20:13, where God tells Moses the punishment for a man sleeping another man is death. There is nothing in it specifying who is to cast the first stone or how many witnesses are required.

And yes I agree, it is very important to understand the Bible, because then you'll understand why it's bullshit, instead of just blindly hating it.

Sniper007 said:

To be precise, "those to cast the first stones" would be the two or three witnesses needed to convict, confessions notwithstanding. So barring those witnesses, according to Mosaic Law, she can't be stoned. But hey, it's not as important to understand the Bible as it is to hate it. ... <cough>

That's because you are talking about America which is 99% made up of immigrants in the first place. There's no such thing as an American ethnicity. America is a melting pot of different cultures and Asians are an inherent part of America. That's why you can't have a white Korean but you can have a Korean-American.

Also, your hidden joke sucks.

No Asian countries accept people of other ethnicities the way Western nations do.

Jim Carrey takes on Gun Control, as only he can

mentality says...

Yeah, it's the liberal values that teaches them to engage in illegal gang related activity. Just like how since most southern slave owners were conservatives, your values caused slavery, you asshole. (just joking).

Also, I call bullshit on your assertion that urban youth gangs have liberal values. I'd say that poorly educated low socio-economic status youths from religiously inclined minorities like hispanics are demographically more conservative, if they bothered to have any political preference at all in the first place. Lets see some proof.

Velocity5 said:

@Deano and @Stormsinger:
"Liberal street gangs and urban youth" refers to the portion of gangs and urban youth who have liberal values (nearly all gangs and urban youth). Those gangs and urban youth are the source of most violent crime, so your thesis that violent crime is due to rural gun-owners is inconsistent with the data.

@EMPIRE and @Fletch:
Your response is that because I have different opinions than you and I'm willing speak against the mainstream, I'm a "troll." That definitely proves me wrong that liberals tend to be closed-minded conformists who punish intellectual diversity

What It's Like To Read the Game of Thrones Books

mentality says...

I was never questioning your personal taste, as I clearly stated that if you didn't like book 1-3, you're not going to like the rest of the series, and there's nothing wrong with that.

The problem is that when you say the series is unhinged and unpredictable, you are completely off base, because everything up to and including book 5 fits with original fan theories of how the series is going to turn out. Just because the characters that you like, those who you thought should be the main characters, turn out not to be, doesn't mean the series is unhinged. But it is a valid reason to not like the series.

And pretending that something is good because it's not enjoyable, really? Where did you get that idea from?

Anyways, just out of curiosity, what are some atypical fantasy books that you enjoy?

Drachen_Jager said:

@mentality

You can enjoy the series if you like. I'm sure you have your reasons. I merely gave the reasons why I think it's a poorly written series. You can't dispute that, unless you claim I am not allowed to have my own opinions (which from what I can see are supported by many, many ex-George R. R. Martin fans).

I don't, and I am far from alone in my feelings toward the series. Every GoT booster says the same things as you. Problem is, it's a load. I read plenty of atypical fantasy, most of which I really enjoy. I stopped reading GoT when I realized it wasn't fun to read anymore.

Oh, and all the characters you mention either sucked IMO or were inaccessibly stupid, cruel, or annoying.

Pretending that it's good, because it's not enjoyable, is just pretentious by the way.

What It's Like To Read the Game of Thrones Books

mentality says...

Uh what?Spoilers:

Arya, Daenerys, John Snow, Bran, Tyrion are all alive and well. (Actually, one of them is in limbo, but whatever).

Your problem is that you bet on all the wrong horses. This is not another generic fantasy tale where house Stark is the good guys and House Lannister are the bad guys. There are a lot of flaws with the series, but unhinged and unpredictable are not on that list. The most popular prediction for the outcome of the series is actually quite interesting, and so far, all the books and pieces of the puzzle fit.

That said, GRRM is taking an awful long time with the set up, and if you didn't like the first 3 books, definitely don't bother with the next two.

Drachen_Jager said:

I think George R. R. Martin has the world's most severe case of ADD.

I read the first three books in the series, and there are a ton of awesome ideas, but it feels like as soon as you get behind a character to cheer for them, they die. The murdered lord's children all get dire wolves as pets in the beginning, and I'm thinking, cool, that's going somewhere, but nada. Some of the wolves die, others run away. You never hear from them again.

The whole series is like that, completely unhinged. I don't know how it's so popular, or why it was made into a TV series. Maybe just the unpredictability of it, there's certainly no other reason to follow the series.
