Solar Highways!!!

malakai says...

Not only does it have to follow contours of the land, but these panels would have to be able to deal with subsidence of the layers of earth under the foundation due to constant rolling point loads from trucks (since cars weigh nothing compared to a fully loaded truck). Asphalt/bitumen can elastically deform and still be a via road surface (i'm sure everyone's noticed 'channels' in the road). Couple that with the need to remove surface run-off water when it rains. True you could make the top road surface bumpy, but once those bumps are worn down you cant re-surface without replacing a whole panel.

On top of that, what happens if the micro-processors suddenly crap out, or some of the LEDs blow. In the first case, any road markings would suddenly disappear, or conversely the road would suddenly light up blinding drivers. In the second case, you'd either have to replace a full panel, or have "acceptable defects" where a certain number of LEDS can blow and the panel won't be compromised.

If they manage to get this to work, kudos to them, but i just can't see it happening with what they've been showing. Would seem to be easier to harness the thermal energy of roads rather than solar energy acting on the roads.

How to get a Red Card

HBO - Game of Thrones teaser trailer 0:22

My bad, i thought the Wheel of Time series was finished, obviously not. Tbh i got bored of the series, particularly around book 11... the book where nothing happens other than "oh what's that happening over there" reactions from everyone, and the typical "i'm a woman, i'm a bitch and totally useless at everything".

Now why isn't there a series about Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen? THAT is some proper epic fantasy written in such a style as to be easy to transfer to film.

Let's hope that doesn't happen, because if it does i'll be infinitely more annoyed than when Jordan failed to finish the Wheel of Time series. Actually, it was finished by another writer, and from what i understand, that final book was the best of the series.

I just can't understand the amount of faffing around Martin has done since he scrapped the first draft of the book 3 years ago. Surely no-one can have writer's block for 3 sodding years!

Here's an idea. Finish the sodding series, or at least A Dance With Dragons! Been waiting far far too long for that book, and Martin seems to have more interest in fucking about than writing.

That's not to say this series doesn't look good. JUST FINISH THE DAMN BOOKS FIRST! *shakes fist*

BP: RIP?

malakai says...

I doubt they would have rushed the job, because if they had, then by default, every other deep-sea well "operated" by BP would be compromised and it would be only a matter of time until they all have the same problem they had here.

I would bet that whoever first drilled the well and installed the casing and the well head would have rushed the job, and looking around a bit on the internet, it seems that the US doesnt require a remote fail-safe installed on wells. So a cock-up in US safety regulations, coupled with rushed work and a crap rig caused this. None of which are wholly down to BP.

BP: RIP?

malakai says...

So making one of the largest global companies not to mention global employers cease to exist is good why? BP fucked up. Well actually no, a sub-contractor fucked up. It wasn't BP's rig that went bust. So why is BP being fucked up the arse so bad? Why isn't the company the rig was leased from being fucked? It was their rig that went boom, it was their well head equipment that failed, not BP's. It just seems to be "Oh BP is the company that owns the well, and they're really big and known, so lets say it was all BP".

I'm not saying that BP are saints, far from it. BP should have better environmental procedures in place to reduce the damage from a blow out such as this, not to mention they should have more effective methods to do so. They also should have started drilling relief wells, or at least set up relief wells, ASAP whilst faffing around with other possible solutions.

I guess i'm just pissed at the fact that BP is getting a massive amount of shit when it wasnt their equipment that fucked up, and the company who owns the fucked equipment barely gets mentioned and has seemed to have gotten away with murder.

RNLI (British Off-shore rescue charity) uses boats that are water tight, self-righting and can still float with 2 out of 5 compartments flooded. There was a How It Works done about it, but i can't seem to find the clip anywhere.

The Hilarious Steve Hughes

Saw this guy at Nottingham Uni back in 2003/2004 along with that other Aussie who talks about shoving an egg up his butt and Alan Carr. This guy was the best of the night, he went on for about 25 minutes and had a great skit about eating home-grown shrooms in Amsterdam.

BP Refuses To Let Journalists Film Coastline

malakai says...

I agree with dannym3141.

Looking at the video, the journalists were in a boat. The "older" footage was taken from a helicopter. Makes sense to stop the mode of transportation that could cause an amplification of the issue from entering the affected area.

And anyway, nothing like this has happened before (in terms of scale and location of the oil leak) and as such no-one knows what to do to fix the spill. A massive company like BP will never ever get things done within 24 hours, there's just too much bureaucracy involved. It'll take weeks for them to find a viable solution in a lab that will scale up and to then roll it out.
