The effect is to juxtapose the seriousness and fame of the performer with a terrible performance to comedic effect. Live footage works much better than videos, as evidenced by the Metallica one which was one of the least well done imo.

This is just one of many parodies done by this person. And it's not nearly the best. Here is the MetaFilter thread about it. My personal favorites are Eric Clapton and Steve Vai. Especially Steve Vai.

Yeah, it's caning essentially. It's apparently illegal to be a homosexual on the Isle of Man, and of course Stephen Fry is gay. I don't know that the actual punishment is birching, but for all I know it may very well be.

I've seen another clip where Derren performs this trick on someone. In that clip, he already had the card rolled up into a cig, and suggested it by playing with the fake cig, but not too much.

4. Choggie entry number 1: "...unless you lurk like so many of the "p's" out there do, irritating the absolute piss outta me....now you know".

5. Several nice people admonish Choggie gently, asking him to be kind.

6. Ignoring Choggie, and taking another user's advice, I sift a music video.

7. Choggie Number 2 : "hey ant, there's a lotta newbies I'd like to lose.....can I have a special button er summpthin"? Hey...I just thought of a way to help you out of probationary status...

8. Thinking Choggie's insults are confined solely to this thread, I post the following, rather mild rebuke: Choggie, Choggie, Choggie, I knew there was a reason I lurked...."

So sure. You can defend Choggie to the death if you like. Personally I'd find someone a bit more.....legible....to become a martyr for. Or you can play the rules lawyer and try to drum up a case that I was being so incredibly verbally abusive as to violate the Sift guidelines, which if you actually read what I wrote, you'll see that I was not.

The signal to noise ratio is higher here than at YouTube, that's for damn sure.

But if the signal comes along with a heaping dose of obsequious sycophants suckling at the teat of all-powerful SENIOR MEMBERS who keep newer members' heads bowed in humility with empty threats and hyperbole mixed with hyper-sensitive hypocrites attempting to apply frontier justice to selective members, then I'll take the noise any day.

I see that you have declared yourself fit to judge what is a personal attack and what isn't. Since you apparently are the official Arbiter of Justice in this manner, I suppose I'll simply have to accept that Gorgon insinuating I was "neglected as a child" is perfectly within the limits of acceptable behavior, whereas my criticizing Choggie for attempting to browbeat me with threats of banning is not.
