Kids React to Controversial Cheerios Commercial

jubuttib says...

First of all, prejudice against race and prejudice against religion aren't quite on equal footing, since one is something you're actually born with and the other is something that you can actually affect later in life with your own decisions. Prejudice against how people are born, something that's totally beyond their own control, that's just insane on the face of it. Prejudice against their religion or lack of it though, since that is either the result of them actively thinking about it and coming to a conclusion, or perhaps more commonly actively not thinking about it and just going with what they were told when they were young... There's room there for a healthy dose of prejudice.

Secondly, censorship isn't the answer, not even on YouTube.

But overall, DAMN it feels good to see stuff like this. Gives hope that maybe, just maybe one day this world won't be so bad after all.

Still, it's just about the best way that I've seen them spend money so far.

Problems with French Numbers - Numberphile

jubuttib says...

Hopefully it'll never come to that. Not because I dislike English as a general rule, but any language where the words you write only bear a passing semblance to how they're actually said out loud isn't a good, practical basis for a world language. What I mean is that almost every letter that's used in the English language can be pronounced in several different ways depending on what the surrounding letters are, or even written the same but depending on how you pronounce them can mean different things (heteronyms like for example bass the fish and bass the instrument/frequency). Then there are silent letters and all sorts of weird combinations of sounds.

The best basis for a proper world language would include at least a writing system where for one thing each letter in the alphabet directly corresponds to a specific sound and is always pronounced the same way (e.g. Japanese hiragana and katakana for example, or the Finnish alphabet), but also takes into consideration stuff like being syntactically unambiguous, the counting system being geared towards working as smoothly as possible with the SI-system, among other things.

English isn't that great of a language from a usability standpoint at the end of the day, the only thing it really has going for itself is that it's popular, but so is Chinese...

Nascar driver freaks out at turning multiple directions

jubuttib says...

To be fair he wasn't freaking out about turning multiple directions, but mainly about the car being able to corner so damn quickly when compared to what he's used to. Those V8SCs are beasts, and at the end of the day they're even not that fantastic at going around corners... =)

How the hell do people not already know this? It's been common knowledge since I was a child!

We can't all be as smart, well-educated, and good looking as you.

I don't think it's about being smart and only partly about being well-educated, just astonishing to me that it isn't common knowledge over there.

Five Things Women Still Have Left to Fight For

jubuttib says...

I don't really understand how you can say "If you don't want to get raped, don't dress like a slut", as if raping sluts is somehow normal or more approved of. Raping anyone is bad, whatever their profession is. Though I do agree with the similar sentiment that "If you don't want to be thought of as a slut, don't dress like a slut." Just like (borrowing from Dave Chappelle) if you don't want to be thought of as a policeman don't go wearing a police uniform.

About the equal pay, they go on about it here too, but it's frankly just bullshit. They get the statistics by running together averages of every job but neglect the fact that if you take a man and a woman who do the same job and have equal experience, they get equal per hour pay. The fact that women on average end up in lower paying jobs and/or do less hours is another issue entirely. If we "equalized" the wages like they're suggesting it'd lead to a situation where women get paid more for less work, which is even less equal.

The microaggression thing... Really? People take the words that seriously? What the fuck is wrong with people? And aren't most swear words in English actually religious in origin, rather than sexual in nature? And even then, I can't think of a single swear word that says "what women do during sex is bad and humiliating". Any suggestions?

Reproductive health... Well, the American medical system is fucked up beyond recognition anyways, so par for the course. Good luck with that.

Media representation is a pretty valid point though, but I must say you don't really see a wide variety of men either, they're largely homogenized in very similar ways to how women in media are usually portrayed. And to the sheer amount of women on TV... I'd like to think that if more women were better at it than men, then there'd be more women there. I don't want a 50/50 split just for the sake of equality, I want the best people to do the jobs whether they're men or women.

Ha. Once you're out of 2nd grade you'll realize that knives can be thrown much farther than 2 steps.

And once you actually try and THROW A KNIFE you'll realize how difficult is it to actually get it to stick to anything at all. Also IT'S A PEN! Cops must be the most blind people on the planet.

I've seen a lot of knives thrown well.
Cops are never going to risk their safety needlessly just so the public can insist on having single-digit IQs.

No offense dude but cops know what they're getting into when they choose the profession. As sad as it is, a real bad guy killing a cop who is using caution is preferable to a cop who is not using caution killing someone who in reality poses little threat.

No offense dude but it's really not hard to see that that vehicle is not a 6X6. It could be the Cougar 4X4 though.

light is special, it goes the same speed EVERYWHERE, EVERY-TIME, ALL THE TIME

Care to elaborate your point on this? The speed of light varies quite wildly depending on the medium it's going through, e.g. in diamonds the speed of light is c/2.42. Otherwise optics (along with other things) wouldn't work.

Granted that the speed doesn't vary within the same medium.
