Peter Schiff (& others): Where to Put Your Money (22/12/08)

I like Peter Schiff because he doesn't sound like he's trying to bullshit anyone. He talks like on TV like I would expect all the rest of these guys to talk when they're not on TV. He doesn't fake a smile, he doesn't pull punches. I have no idea if he's right, but who could?

How can it ever get to the point where someone could say "I think it's important that, you know, the directors of the banks should understand what they're doing."

What? Seriously? We have to question whether the people being paid hundreds of millions of dollars annually to decide the direction of banks understand banking? What? What? WHAT?

Maddow: "GOP Platform is to Decrease American Workers Pay"

I don't understand why the failure of the "Big 3" ensures that all of their current infrastructure would instantly implode into nothingness. A lot of that infrastructure could be sold and reused, could it not? Those factories are (hopefully) optimally set up for producing cars... who is to say that someone wouldn't come along, buy up the factories, rehire (some of) the workers and get some shit going again?

And who is to say that if a worker does lose their job that they'd necessary have to get into an entirely new industry?

And why does their savings have to disappear? I mean, I understand that when the company you work for falls out from beneath you that you shouldn't expect any kind of parting gift, but what you have earned you don't have to give back, do you? Do these people have any savings at all? For how many months of unemployment have they been preparing themselves to deal with in the worst case scenario that they lose their job? That's something that every person in the world should be thinking about at some point... live within your means and plan for the worst, or take the risk that comes with living outside of your means.

I know, I know, that's idealist thinking and reality doesn't work that way... people are born into shit situations and aren't handed the best opportunities from the start... but still, you've got to plan for at least SOMETHING bad to happen, right?

I also dislike the way she uses her voice. I like the song, though. It's got redeeming qualities in that it tells a story that's easy to relate to, it's got a memorable melody that most people can hum or sing for themselves, and it's got some dark undertones. If only someone else would sing it...

By the way, this style of singing (John Mayer is similar) is so annoying to me because it's so limiting as far as the palette of colors it offers to a singer. When every part of every song you sing is sung breathily, all of your songs sound the same. I can hear that her voice has so much potential for other timbres and colors and textures and intensities, but she's put this cap on it. Gah.

Mormon Church Faces Prop 8 Backlash

I wish gay activists and constitutionally-minded activists would focus on removing "marriage" as a state-backed institution in favor of civil unions for everyone and marriage for those who give a shit about the religious aspect of it. What's happening these days is trying to fix a broken piece of legislation by adding new clauses to it rather than just replacing it with something that isn't broken in the first place.

It'd be a hell of an uphill battle, but even if the only thing to come out of it were some intelligent discussions regarding the intent and meaning of separation of church and state, and discussions regarding the history and meaning and future of marriage... well, I think that'd be a valuable thing for society going forward.

Too bad these obnoxious dimwits weren't all aborted.

Think for a second... if these people had been aborted, then the parents obviously would have been pro-abortion. If they did ever have kids in the future, what side of the issue do you think they would be on?

I don't understand most of this economic stuff because I've never put time into trying to understand it. However, I also don't understand how people who have made a living off of trying to understand it can so often be so completely wrong. How does that work? How is it that people who fail so horribly end up so rich?

Shouldn't we all put our effort into producing something useful to humanity in the most efficient way possible? If someone else is willing to do crap work like tech support cheaper than I am, shouldn't I let them and then do something else useful instead?

Why do people invest in things that they don't understand? Why do people invest in things that they don't think are going to be productive? Why do people feel like they are owed something when they've made a risky investment and lost all of it? Couldn't they have invested in the production of food instead? Or in the development of new technologies to make the production of food more efficient? If the economy goes to shit and people can't afford to buy all this organic crap anymore if there's no way to produce enough of it to feed everyone who needs food, what's going to happen? Will people live shit lives in the rest of their lives so they can continue to eat organic food instead of buying food that can be produced in bulk which will allow them to still be able to afford their house?

I just don't get it... I'd really like to read about some basics of economy so I understand this crap better. Anyone have any recommendations? Something that doesn't give me anyone's opinion but just gives me a factual analysis?
