I found the duo making the argument for the motion were idiots. I found that the fanatics making the arguments against were more articulate in their positions, and didn't rely on humanist appeals, or utter confusion that befell the side that was for the motion, but rather, the religious and societal absolutism espoused by the side arguing against the argument, bares the true face of their religion, one that cannot stand in the face of opposing veiwpoints without unveiling the bigotry behind their words in defense of their faith.

As a result, these speakers against the motion would have done themselves a service if they would have just boycotted the debate in the first place, as their interactions with the audience and the moderator truly damaged them in this instance. To have young woman stand up, and state that the female arguing for the rights of the family over those of the individual, was insulting her intelligence and mocking her ability to make sane choices, is probably the worst PR you can get from a debate of this type. It patronizes those you need to convince most. They spoke more to the religious absolutists and to the families, rather than to those rasing the issue, and that is where they have lost this debate.

American Commercial Misrepresents Canadian Healthcare

Long story short, Canadians DON'T TALK LIKE HER. wow. Do you hear the words she is saying? If someone walked up to me on the street and said that government shouldn't get between me and my doctor, I'd walk her to a walk in clinic, walk into the doctors office, and say hi. Our health debate is a consensus. Our argument is over making it better, not making it humane.

Alberta Budget 2008 Speech

Calling health care the number one priority for Albertans, she's eliminated health care premiums as of next January 1. The government has also set aside $145 million to attract and retain doctors, and other health care professionals. Health care spending takes up one-third of the provincial budget.

Evans announced $800 million set aside for the Water for Life strategy, $600 million to combat climate change, and $55 million to defeat the pine beetle.

In an appeal to families, Alberta will create 14,000 new care spaces and give tax breaks to those who care for elderly parents at home. After school care will also receive more financing.

Calgary’s mayor Dave Bronconnier got some of what he hoped; the province guaranteed 41 more police officers for Calgary, and more Crown prosecutors.

In all, the province of Alberta will spend $37 billion dollars next budget year, and save $279 million for the Heritage Fund.

The Stelmach governtment is anticippating it will take in more than 38.6-billion dollars this year and spend 37-billion dollars.

That's nearly 10 per cent more than last year.

Right now the surplus is estimated to be 1.6-billion dollars.

The biggest reason for the increase in spending is the health system which will get nearly 10 per cent more money. The Calgary Health Region's budget goes up nearly 200-million dollars.

The 2008 Alberta budget was based on increased oil royalty revenues of $1.8 billion yearly, and a $78 per barrel oil price.

Budget Critics Eye Surplus

Alberta's opposition parties are offering some rare words of praise for the new provincial budget, but others are more critical.

Liberal Leader Kevin Taft says he's delighted to see Premier Ed Stelmach's Tory government eliminate health-care premiums in the new year, although Taft claims this was a Liberal idea.

N-D-P Leader Brian Mason agrees, but he has some problems with the government's modest surplus projection of $1.6 billion.

Mason says if oil remains around the current price, the surplus could end up being five billion dollars higher.

Scott Hennig, with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, says a record 37 billion dollars in spending-12 per cent more than last year-is a recipe for disaster if revenues don't keep pace.

Lloyd Bertschi, president of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, says communities will be happy with increased funding and more cash for affordable housing.

But he has concerns about whether the province will continue to pay the cost of 300 new police officers after a three-year hiring program ends.

Today's budget also includes billions to address Alberta's rapid growth-money for hospitals, schools, roads, crime reduction and efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Where is Canada? If America can pay for all the Mexican illegal invaders' emergency room visits, shouldn't CANADA, who believes the WHOLE WORLD should have "free" health care, step in and rescue this poor woman?

SOMETIMES WE DO. YOU'RE WELCOME.

We also fight your war.

*edit*

There are plenty of recorded incidents where U.S. citizens cross the border, and go see Canadian doctors. Your ignorance is astounding, your argument patently false and indicative of many of your nations citizens who are poorly educated about Canada.

The Difference between Canadian health care and American health care.

"On average, U.S. citizens experience some of the shortest wait times for non-emergency
surgeries among industrialized countries, although the waiting times vary considerably by
procedure [11]. Furthermore, the short waiting times apply mainly to those who have insurance;
for those who do not, the waiting line is arguably infinite."

See the words "for those who do not" in this report on a comparison between US and Canadian waiting times. Yeah, we have some pretty weak things that are going on in our country, in regards to health care. No one is perfect. However, that line, that simple statement "for those who do not" does not exist in Canada.

That is why any argument you can put forward, ie. advances in equipment, wait times, or by my accounts minimal (or, in redneck, - fascist) government oversight, or the treatment of our aboriginal population, any of these arguments fall flat in the face of these following arguments

- Everyone is on the waiting lists that need to be, yet the quality of care does not go down, and we live longer, and people can move up on the waiting lists in case of urgency. (If you show up at the emergency room and need an operation or procedure to save your life, it is provided, free of cost, as with your recuperation and aftercare. Waiting lists are in part a result of brain drain to your stupid country where doctors are paid more, to prescribe unnecessary care to people who don't know any better to enlarge their paychecks, while patients are dropped at fire halls upon discovery that they are uninsured, disgusting behavior I might add.)

- Everyone, including the aboriginal populations in our country, get health care, instead of being denied. Fuck, you almost completed a genocide against your population, am I incorrect? Anyways, I digress. What I love about our system, is an accurate quote from an msnbc article, that reads, "Most have made their appointments that day. None will receive a bill." - You also tax your citizens to go to war in far flung corners of the earth for national security, a government run entity, and yet you balk at the very idea of sending tax dollars towards health care, which SHOULD be a government run organization.

- Our prescription drugs cost much less in our country because pharmaceutical war- i mean, druglords, aren't giving us hourly corporate mandated rectal exams here in the great white north. Huzza! That is why there is a billion dollar industry for us, and that market comes from desperate Americans, unable to afford the medicine that allows them to function, add to their economy, be productive in their society, and not worry about their health care, and thus are free to pursue their liberty, and justice for all. Cue Metallica. (?)

Idiot.

WindstonField is unreasonable. I don't know where those numbers come from but they are not accurate.
Unreasonable? Based on what? That I have a different opinion than you? That I can reasonably and calmly discuss the benefits of private markets over socialism? The fact that I can find holes, flaws, and errors in opposing arguments? What specifically is it that you find 'unreasonable' in my demeanor, text, and discourse?
As far as the numbers I cited go - I gave you the link. It's right there. Random sample, 1200 people, +/-3% MOE. I do stats for a living. The survey instrument looks pretty clean.
You personally may not like your plan, but your evidence is anecdotal. The survey results prove conclusively that your dissatisfaction is in the minority. That doesn't mean people don't have things they don't like. It just means that overall they are happy with their health care. End of story. Rail against reality all you want, but the truth is the truth.
Why do you think Obama's health care plan is faring so poorly with the public? Pretty much this poll tells the story. He's trying convince the 88% of the population that is fine with things as they are that they MUST throw the dice on his undefined, largely imaginary, government boondoggle 'plan' in a time when people are far more concerned about unprecedented government deficits. Deficits that his 'plan' would quadruple down on - I may add...

Get fucked, idiot.

*edit

oh, and nice poll from 2006. Before the recession. Asking an American about health care is a useless enterprise anyways. Do you know why we have not had this kind of useless conflict and argument in our country in our modern history? It's because we tend to marginalize people who would use freedom as an argument against common sense.

I am Canadian. I'm very much proud that our system is such a wonderful adventure in national society. Where citizens on one half of the nation, give of their efforts, so that the least fortunate of us on the other half, need not suffer and die, but flourish and strive for health. We know that we are helping people. That is why when I pay into our health system, not only is it paying for my health care, whenever I may need it in the future, but I also know that friends and family that I have all over my huge, beautiful, and vibrant country, have no need to fear about those things. If you go to a hospital in Canada, you are seen, and treated. Our system is not perfect, but noone is dying due to lack of access to the system. Everyone has access. How hard is that to understand? How can you turn away fellow humans at the door? Why is paper money worth more than human life?

No, I see these videos, the hate in the speakers, the hate in the words. What is it? Is it the utter condemnation of equality? The loudly spoken statement that some are better and more deserving than others? This is 2009. Grow up.

Mexico Legalizes Drug Possession (Worldaffairs Talk Post)

detheter says...

>> ^Psychologic:
They're only allowed to have 5g of weed? That's less than a quarter of an ounce (damn english system)... hopefully that is only a limit on the amount a person can carry on them.
The problem with the prohibition system is that criminal organizations control the distribution. Decriminalizing small amounts won't help unless people can grow their own plants. If users can't do that then they still have to pay those organizations to obtain the drugs, further funding their often violent activities.

People are going to pay the organizations anyways. At the same rate. Except unlike the U.S.A, now small time possession won't amount to criminal prosecution, freeing up police, and courts, to prosecute those violent criminals. They will also save money, referring to incarcerating people in prison for possession. This in turn will cease the production of criminals, who, while non violent and peaceful people who just wanted to get high, after being forced to join a gang and smuggle things up their assholes for their 'daddy', will likely leave the prison system after being repeatedly raped and beaten by hardcore inmates, and find themselves in a life of crime, thus creating more crime, more violence, and yes, more drug dealers.

Decriminalization leads to ordinary citizens remaining ordinary citizens, and criminals remaining behind bars. I live in Canada, and we have decriminalized small amounts as well. Your view is typical of the half thought out way your fellow countrymen approach most societal issues. Under your system, I would be in prison learning how to shank someone right now, so that when I get out to no job, life, family, I can kill your moms for her purse. Then you cry foul. Well foul on you friendo.

Quentin Tarantino's Top 20 Favorite Movies Since 1993

Battle Royale is one of my favorite movies as well. along with district 9, from last night.

This list is probably more honest then some people would like to see, those people are not happy that every film on this list isn't obscure, underground, or in the genres that QT throws into his own films.
