The Story of Cap and Trade

brain says...

I hate this video. She seems to have some good points here and there, but most of it seems like total propaganda to make you hate cap and trade.

1. How does it make any sense that she's comparing cap and trade to the dot com bubble and the sub prime mortgage bubble?! What does it mean that its "coming from the same guys"? What is she even talking about? Why does she automatically infer that there will be a carbon credit bubble that will burst? I don't think I'll be investing my money in carbon credits anyway. Is she just scared of the word 'market'? Or is she intentionally playing off of people's fears of 'markets' in recent times?

2. She mentions that we'll be giving carbon credits to companies that already pollute. She may have a point there. That sounds stupid. If you read on wikipedia though, some cap and trade plans auction off all carbon credits to companies. Other ones "grandfather" companies into carbon credits. Some plans do both. She decides to not even mention auctioning carbon credits. She decides to just rename all cap and trade plans to "cap and giveaway" plans. Nice propaganda.

3. She mentions that people can cheat the laws to receive carbon offset credits. Ok.. lets fix that. Lets get rid of carbon offset credits if we have to. Why would we scrap the whole thing?

If she was just discussing points and problems, it would have been great. But it seems like the whole point of the video is to make you scared of cap and trade. The fundamental concept of cap and trade is still sound.

What happened to this video? The original one I saw had real audio, rather than this horrible music. It also let you hear all the players at the end saying "wow!" "no way!" and one person saying "THATS BULLSHIT!". It was my favorite part.

Substance dualism

brain says...

If elementary particles undergoing quantum effects isn't physical, then I don't know what is.

>> ^raverman:
This makes some broad generalisations to make a point specifically against religion.
Most quantum theory also enters this area of non-physical substance. By this measure we should stop all research and say "only what we can physically percieve is real".
Dark matter is considered to exist because it is inferred by the nature of the physical universe. In yet it has not been physically proven to have substance.
Quantum entanglement was impossible in earlier physics. Physical objects should not be able effect each other in a seemingly non-physical way.
Most mathematical theories of the universe require non-physical substance to complete the picture. Extra dimensions, time as a 4th layer, Branes of time and space.
If non-physical can exist outside the our 3 physical percievable dimensions it says more about our tools for detection than it does about the known vs. unknown of the universe.

Intelligence - Religion - Democrat - Republican

brain says...

I was about to post the same Snopes link that was already posted. The state IQ data has been verified to be completely false.

I actually have researched this in the past. I couldn't find any good reliable data for IQ levels by state. I did however find data for education level by state. I was interested in it because Republicans always claim that Republicans are more likely to have 4 year degrees. This is true, but I think it's misleading. Here is basically what I found:

1. Undereducated people are slightly more Democratic.
2. People with 4 year degrees are more Republican.
3. People with postgraduate degrees are extremely Democratic.

However, minorities are tipping the scales.

1. Minority races are more likely to be undereducated.
2. Minority races are extremely democratic.
3. If you look only at white people, educated level and being a Democrat are directly correlated.

When I researched it, I made these charts. And I actually used real data!

BBC Newsnight Heated Debate Over "Climategate"

brain says...

Why would I watch a television show that takes a professor that's a marine and atmospheric scientist, and an expert in processes that affect atmospheric carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations, and puts him in a debate with a political "communications director".

Rule of thumb: When one side of a debate is the consensus of knowledgeable people in the field, and the other side of the debate is... something else... it's pretty easy to decide who to trust.
