47 knots on a Hydrofoil Trimaran

Wingoguy says...

Go-fast boats are not small hydroplaning vessels. They have a standard V-hull design which using displacement to keep itself afloat. They simply use enormous amounts of power to muscle their way through the water; they have no specific design feature to reduce drag.

This will only work on nearly flat surfaces as well, not suitable for open ocean drug smuggling.

47 knots on a Hydrofoil Trimaran

Wingoguy says...

"That's somewhat faster than any naval fleets can travel. The only vessels that can go 45+ knots are small hydroplaning vessels. The titanic went a measly 23 knots."

...only true for wind-powered craft. Go-fast/cigarette boats go much faster, up to 80kts, for example.

That's the raw power of an EA-6B Prowler, baby! One from the VAQ-136 Gauntlets taking off the USS Kitty Hawk, now decommissioned, to be exact.

Pirate Bay: Guilty

Wingoguy says...

Complaining about a legitimate and legal way to make money, i.e. owning the rights to intellectual property, seems like a rail against capitalism to me. Many people hate Bill Gates for not building MicroSoft from the ground up with his own bare hands. Doesn't make him any less rich.

Maybe you find a rich music corporation executive to not have the most noble job in the world, and that's fine. But in capitalism, that's legit.

I can see your point. The argument in this thread sounds a little like, "If the music store has no theft prevention, they deserve to be shoplifted from." I know it's not a direct analogy, but really, if you bend aside the fact that one is a physical CD and the other is just the music, I believe it's the same.

It seems like there's not a lot of fans of capitalism in this sift. If that's not your thing, that's fine by me.

I personally believe:

1. Companies should be allowed to profit from good products and services.
2. Creators deserved to be paid for their quality work.

Robber surprised when pharmacist opens fire in CVS

Wingoguy says...

According to their website, Americorp pays you a modest salary that's enough to pay your bills.

Regarding the military, only a small percentage of the millions of serving men and women will ever kill someone, become permanently injured on the job, or spend the rest of their lives trying to forget something they've done. This isn't Vietnam. If you're concerned about those things, join the Air Force, Navy, or Coast Guard where the odds of those things happening to you are minuscule.

You've left out a few very good, and feasible options:

1. Join the US military - get a fair paycheck, good training and plenty of educational opportunities
2. If you're a pacifist, join Americorps - get job experience and money for education

I honestly don't know what's wrong with these, so please feel free to state your case. They both seem better than all the below options.

"A dumb, uneducated poor man without family connections has four choices, roughly in order of preference:

1. Conforming to every whim of a corporation in exchange for just enough money to survive (and not enough to get an education or proper healthcare). This is better than slavery, but not a whole lot better.
2. The dole (maybe)
3. Theft
4. Starving to death
5. Selling drugs"

Obama's Message to the Iranian People

Wingoguy says...

I found this translation from the Farci subtitles that aired in Iran:

"Nation of terrorists! We will overwhelm you with our crusaders! Soon, we will transport all of the Iranians in America back to you so we may crush you all together! Prepare for the final hours of your nation! The Great Satan has spoken!!!"

Fox News Declares War on Canada

Wingoguy says...

Open letter to Canadians,

This show, Red Eye, airs in the wee hours of the morning, something like 3:00am for the East Coast. It's basically Fox News' version of the Daily Show, only with much worse writing and largely not funny. This show holds no credibility with almost any American, even the crazy right-wing neocons. This episode was taking cheap shots at Canada that Americans like to chuckle at every once in a while, largely because most of us know next-to-nothing about your country. I know Canadians do the same to Americans on many occasions; view some of the comments on this video for examples.

Bottom line: Only the worst of the worst would be taking the views from this show to heart and believe them credible. Please don't sweat it.

Thanks.

Upvote for the great comment.

"A few minutes later, kid and dad sought me out, they couldn't sort out why God made skunks and they wanted to know if I knew what their job was.

I said they don't have a job. They're skunks. They eat grubs and defend themselves from predators. They looked at each other with very little to say. Education wins again."
