SpaceX Lands Stage 1 on Land!

VoodooV says...

Can someone edumacate me? I get that the point of this seems to be the achievement of reusable rockets. But the fuel required to slow the rocket and stabilize it for landing seems counterproductive. Or has the cost of rocket fuel compared to the cost of building new rockets made it so that they don't care about the extra rocket fuel they burn now?

Steve Harvey Announces Wrong Winner of Miss Universe 2015

VoodooV says...

Feel bad all around.

Feel bad that they still have ridiculous contests like this.

Feel bad for Colombia and Philippines.

Feel bad for the committee who thought Steve Harvey was a great idea and who are probably out of a job.

Hillarious that that piece of shit exits as quick as he can.

You *may* have worked with Roberts, but clearly you don't know much about him. Roberts' games have always pushed the limits of PC hardware. It's not unexpected to have to upgrade a PC or build a new one in order to play them adequately.

I bought my first PC just to play Wing Commander. I spent about 300 dollars upgrading my RAM from 4MB to 8 and bought my first CD-ROM drive in order to play Wing Commander 3.

Hopefully, in a few months I'll be upgrading my video card in order to play Squadron 42.

None of this is unexpected.

I don't know a lot about the game, true, but from what I have heard, he's promised a LOT and hasn't delivered on much.

I don't doubt that the tech is real and running, but I'd be surprised if that dev is running average hardware. Back in the late 90's when I was working with him, for shows like E3, he'd get top-of-the-line hardware that cost thousands of dollars to run it at a decent framerate.

And again, spoken like someone who doesn't seem to know anything about the game.

Large portions of the game are available to play right now, albeit in an early alpha state. Granted, yes the procedural planets portion is not in our hands yet, but as OverLord just showed, it appears to be working.

Having worked with Chris Roberts in the past, I would take everything sold with a grain of salt until you actually see it in the final product. If you ever do.

He is a fantastic salesman though, I'll give him that. Nice guy too.

Blacksmith Debunks 9-11 Myth

they're so hung up on the word melt that they ignore anything else.

Yes, it doesn't melt the steel, but it makes it so weak that it collapses.

..HA! so it doesn't melt, so the conspiracy must be true!!

Why the Electoral College Ruins Democracy

VoodooV says...

electoral college is fine. It's gerrymandering and "winner take all" that fuck it up. The founders are right about direct democracy not being good in situations like this.

Eliminate those two things and the electoral college is fine and it would eliminate swing states as well.

Popular vote would totally fuck over any area that doesn't have a high population density. I'd be fine with tweaking the voter-to-electoral vote proportions though and get rid of the "electors" That would be reasonable.

It may need tweaks and refinements, but the overall concept is still valid.

Star Trek Beyond - Trailer 1

If you're referring to my comment. The prequel comics which are supposedly part of the canon is that the Narada is a borg-ified romulan vessel.

They use that as part of the reason why JJverse Enterprise is different from TOS Enterprise. The explanation goes that the Kelvin scanned the Narada and magically gleamed all the borg tech from those scans which led to a massive explosion of new technology. so JJverse tech is supposedly roughly on par with TNG-era tech if not better because of the borg tech boost from the Narada....all that from just scans of the ship.

Don't blame me, that's just what I read

EDIT: just looked it up. Yep, that's what the writers wrote about it.

What the Hell? That doesn't even look a little bit like the Borg.

Star Trek Beyond - Trailer 1

VoodooV says...

I wouldn't mind it so much if not for two things:

1) I thought they specifically said that this movie was supposed to be more "old school star trek" and more cerebral

2) all the action seemed like a total repeat of the last two movies.

I used to not mind the reboot. I hated the whole alternate timeline thing and the Borg involvement, but I thought the movies themselves were still fun and decent. I'm just so sick of it now. I'm done.

nightly news covers trump 23X more than sanders

VoodooV says...

Media loves sensationalism and controversy and that is what is driving our current era of reality-show elections. Media wants page views and ad revenue so they will always go with controversial distractions and bullshit aka Trump.

Actual governance is boring. Peace is boring. Compromise is boring. Being rational is boring. Policy is boring. Nuance makes the heads of stupid people hurt.

Money is at the heart of it and money is made off of drama.
