Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate

Absolutely true, which is why I even bother to bitch about it. It wouldn't mean anything to me if it hadn't once been different, but it feels to me like a new wave blew into town awhile ago and has been steadily taking hold here. Whereas the top 15 once were dominated by politics and ideas, it's now at least half "dude, did you see that" and "isn't that cute" style videos. The conversation seems to have generally followed the trend. It's always well-spoken, but more often than not discusses presentation, petty flaws, or (like above) stereotypes the presenter rather than discussing their ideas assuming they have merit and seeking to disprove them from that perspective rather than resorting to marginalization of character.

Maybe I'm grasping at straws to try to stir up some of the more interesting conversation that once was spearheaded by people I often disagreed with but always learned something from that are no longer part of this site, but truth be told I do this on a 9 vote video because I know I don't have the energy to follow it up. My kids an job are always first, my own ideals and stimuli second.

That said, thanks for replying and making a point that directly addressed mine without calling me some sort of name. It's exactly that sort of thing I'd like to see more of around here.

Could be worse, could be a site where shit is posted and people just follow along blindly with no attempt at reasonable debate. I (and I'm sure most people) would rather see thought before the "fox news approach".

Fill in the blanks needed to marginalize any idea you don't 100% agree with. Don't stop there, please tell us what you would have done different, that's my favorite thing on this site now. It's turned into a meta-criticism site where everyone is smarter than the content; so smart they need not discuss it.

Considering the nature of the revolution, it is my belief that the initial point of the 2nd Amendment was to facilitate the overthrow of a foreign (or corrupt) government by the people. That said, when we spend 40% of our tax revenue on the military industrial complex the whole "overthrow government by force" thing is kinda out the window. That & more guns in society sure as hell don't make our daily lives any better.

I guess the point is, we're kinda screwed either way. Maybe we should focus more on taking back our republic through acts of civil disobedience and persistent culture change. Let's just make sure that when we decide to go down this route for a more comfortable living we don't forget that only we, the citizens, can stop the downslide into a fiscal oligarchy.

Spot on.

VS has been on the road to an echo chamber for the last year or two. I am disappoint.

I think shiny and QM represent the fringes (relatively speaking) on this site, but they've obviously got thick skin. The real problem is that we've lost some of the middle-ground that tied the two extremes together.

I wonder if cyberbalkanization affects the Sift to the point where it is easy to push members such as @shinyblurry, @quantumushroom, and others like that to the fringes.
Just sayin'.

David Gilmour and David Bowie do Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb

I love his new video/song. What has always set Bowie apart is that he can touch some level of humanity present in everyone because he seems very aware of it in himself. At 66, he's not trying to be Mick Jagger, making the same music he did much earlier in his lifetime.

If everyone could learn to continuously evolve in what they do like Bowie, the world would be a much better place.

Dunno man, their two vibes follow a similar groove during their respective hey-days... recognizable textures with the ethereal and lyrical abstractions in-step with the evolution of album-groove at the time...Bowie invariably had long-jam-cuts on hi best albums-He also surrounded himself with cutting edge fringe musicians for special tracks similar to the Floyd crew....Eno...Fripp...Belew......
Bowies the ultimate rock/pop/dance god! His new viddy creeps me out.

Absolutely. I don't believe there is a conspiracy of any sort, just idiots in government doing what idiots do. ("conservative" or otherwise) We need to solve this the same way we need to solve our other government related problems: Expose the truth with logic, reason, communication, and hard work.

It's nothing new...and I'm not sure the end results are deliberate. It is, however, the end result of conservative (or maybe just stupid) minds being placed in a position to make the rules. Simple minds produce simple answers (such as standardizes testing, instead of teaching to the individual), and simple answers to complex issues inevitably fail.

Sounds good, I'll do the conference and then let the television viewing public vote on my gayness. It's like democracy and the free market combined... genius!

Well, if you think there might be any confusion out there, you can always hold a press conference. Also, I think a lot of those girls out there know that their boyfriends interest in their butts is not gay, but hope that the implied gayness will kill that thought outright.
