Slavoj Zizek: PC is a more dangerous form of totalitarianism

Truckchase says...

A threat of violence based on something that might annoy or scare you.

Weird that I'm the US citizen.

"The idea is that if you smoke during the flight e-cigarette you publicly display your addiction and that is not a good pedagogical example for others and so on and so on."

Or (far more likely) the airline realised that other passengers don't like people smoking around them in a confined space. You want to vape at home or outside? Knock yourself out. But kindly refrain from doing so in my cramped airspace. Otherwise, we'll test the old adage about how my right to swing my fist ends at your face.

He hasn't really presented any kind of decent argument here. Ok, the Carmen thing is stupid, but if you actually read the story behind that, it's because the Opera house was sponsored by a health company. Essentially they bowed to commercial pressure. Nothing to do with PC.

Even if WAS a "PC" decision, on what planet is that "a more dangerous form of totalitarianism"?

Someone decided they didn't want to stage an opera because there's smoking in it... oh no! Save us from opera-hitler!

Did the government step in and force them to do this? Nope, they made the decision themselves.

If you define "effectiveness" as making money, I'll give you that.

If you define it as progress toward a better government, society, or understanding of others, then I beg to disagree.

Thanks for getting my point @Truckchase

Glad we're on the same page.

Next, just admit that you don't agree with his tactics.

Instead of denying their effectiveness at gaining an engaged following.

Maher's platform has always been promoting hate of the "other" as he defines it. He's no different than the religious zealots he condemns.

Unfortunately in the US there is an financial incentive and willing (yes, small) audience that will pay money to live in his echo chamber.

If you can't hear what I'm saying maybe it's too loud over there.

Swear everyone on the sift has shit logic.

Define "small fanbase".

You think that providing thought provoking political satire to innumerable crowds of strangers over 35 years as a comedian..

Acquiring and maintaining two relatively popular sociopolitical panel discussion shows for over 20 years..

And creating a documentary entitled Religulous with the express purpose of calling on our society at large to question their own religious convictions..

ISN'T effective or engaging..?

Yet Jon Stewart..

The same Jon Stewart who has explicitly stated that he's doesn't wish to be considered some political figurehead.

And whose Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear - while rather large and somewhat inspiring - was PURPOSEFULLY meant to be neutral..

Not leaning to one viewpoint or another and, thereby, basically useless and ineffectual..

is some sort of generational-change messiah by comparison?

OR! @Lawdeedaw & @ Truckchase..

Do you just not like Bill Maher and think Jon Stewart is "cooler"/funnier..?

Because that definitely what it seems like..

Yes on Fox News: An insult to Yes fans everywhere.

Effective at making a small, angry fanbase feel feelings <> creating change by engaging the masses.

GenjiKilpatrick said:

His messages wouldn't be as effective.

Rubbing people the wrong way is the best way to get attention.

Without his abrasive style, he would never have gained his platform/s.

That was supposed to be a lead in to discussing BluesNews. "Uh huh. "

The internet. It builds trust and our relationships here are real and a great substitute for face to face interaction. I'm glad this is the future.

Is there a button for 67% sarcasm? Shit, 58% now.... fuck.
