Election predictions? (Election Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

Yesterday I'd have pegged it as 303 Obama, 235 Romney (the map being the same as 2008, but Romney picks up IN, FL, and NC).

Based on the returns I'm seeing as of 10:15pm, I'd say 319 Obama, Romney 219, with the map being 2008, but Romney gets IN, NC, and VA...and Obama holds Florida.

Right now I'm ready to make $10,000 bets Obama will win. Romney would need to run the table to just squeak a win at this point.

Lena Dunham: Your First Time

Since when have entertainers been a "compass of political direction?"

Since when have entertainers been any more dysfunctional than your average person who gets rapidly launched into a position of fame and fortune?

Since when have self-styled sober, somber people actually been any smarter or wiser than people with senses of humor?

Since when has anyone been dependent on entertainers for decisions on our future?

Nothing you're saying makes any sense to me, unless of course you start by making some rather condescending assumptions about the sorts of people who're likely to vote for Obama.

I've wondered for a long time why our entertainers have become such a compass of political direction. With many of their own lives so steeped in dysfunction it speaks to our own sense of alignment that we have, in ways, become dependent on their voices for decisions regarding our future. Strange, that. Not difficult to understand, but strange.

TDS: Not Optimal-Gate

NetRunner says...

They're both kinda petty nitpicking, but there's a pretty big difference, both in substance and style.

The supposed issue behind NotOptimalGate is that Obama was showing a disregard for the lives lost. If you watched the interview, or even the actual video clip of just that question and answer, you can tell that's not the case at all.

With binders full of women, I didn't really get the sense that people were really thinking that phrase itself was a big problem, just that it was an inartful phrase that seemed to be the launching point for a whole lot of jokes made at Romney's expense.

So on the one hand, you have Republicans willfully distorting what was said in order to gravely accuse Obama of being disrespectful towards the dead in the aftermath of a national tragedy...and Democrats using Romney's inartful turn of phrase to make fun of him.

One seems really unscrupulous and hostile, the other seems like the kind of trash talk you get between sports fans when the other team fumbles the ball.

Republican stupid reaction Not Optimal gate. Just as stupid as the Democrats the week before with Binder gate.
