Kim Jong Un Death Scene From "The Interview"

Mikus_Aurelius says...

Really? So we think N Korea is just going to start shelling the corporate headquarters of any company they don't like? I don't think this is a realistic concern.

The ridiculous thing about Sony's decision is:

1) Japanese companies consult with and defer to their government about everything, much more than American companies do.

2) The current Japanese government is happy to give the finger to South Korea and China.

I feel those attacking Sony for being 'un-American' and caving to the hackers should be reminded, Sony is a Japanese company, and so is based well inside N Korea's nuclear and/or conventional weapon range.

A-10 attacks taliban positions in Afghanistan

Mikus_Aurelius says...

I think the problem is that we never know who we'll be fighting next. A-10s fly low and slow, and would be completely vulnerable to an enemy with moderate AA capabilities. Sure, maybe we're "lucky" and the next war is against a ragtag militia in the mountains that can't shoot them down. But if we butt heads with Iran or North Korea, the A-10s all have to stay home.

And they are phasing that model out.. A10 is simple and it works but nah, they want something hi-tech to keep the budget staggeringly high. It's like replacing every spoon in your house with robots that don't know what soup is.

Beheading isn't quick. Heads are responsive for awhile after you cut them off, so they're experiencing something, and I bet they don't like it. If you're going to kill something violently, I think you need to smash up the brain ASAP.

If you're willing to drop the violence requirement, I think you'd find this useful:

A quick but violent death is the least painful, as I imagine the guillotine is still the least painful form of execution. Probably difficult to get a flies head in the blocks though.

I'm Pooping So Bad

Mikus_Aurelius says...

I wouldn't put blame on any individual parents. And certainly everything I've read says not to stress kids out about elimination. Given where this kid seems to be, the dad is probably reacting fine (minus filming it).

It is pretty weird though that we westerners teach our babies to poop on themselves. It's by no means universal. If you give infants an cleaner way to poop, they'll generally use it. Anal control shows up naturally as soon as they start eating solid foods.

Solar FREAKIN' Roadways!

Mikus_Aurelius says...

I looked at their website.

They won't even tell you what these cost.

If they were anywhere near the ballpark of existing methods, they'd be crowing about it to anyone who would listen. If these things paid for themselves in 5 years or even 10 years, every city in the country would be lining up to float some bonds. This is a manufactured product, installed by hand trying to compete with a bucket of sludge dumped out of a truck. It's not going to be 50% more expensive. It's going to be 20 times more expensive.

I'm an environmentalist, but I'm not interested in projects that are so expensive that they'll never be implemented. That's a carbon savings of zero.

Energy cost nothing. How about the cost in dollars. Sure any solar panel will eventually pay for itself, so why isn't every surface in the world covered in them yet?

Common sense, combined with the fact that he never in 7 minutes makes any mention of the fixed upfront cost, leads me to believe that this would be the boondoggle to end all boondoggles. Hell, even just burying our utility wires underground is too expensive for any but the richest or densest cities.

Ok this is freakin awesome. If they could actually do this, it would be amazing.

I do wonder though about the total energy cost in manufacturing, installing and maintaining this. I'm not saying it's impossible to do, but when something sounds too good to be true, it generally is.

David Letterman on Fracking

Mikus_Aurelius says...

You may not like it, but it's not a strawman argument. If we were fracking in Uganda and shipping the gas here, no one would be complaining. Any serious environmentalist would rather we burn natural gas than coal or oil.

I'm not in a position to argue about why Americans use so much oil. But the fact is that they do, and if natural gas displaces that, then you calculate the net benefit. The only way oil comes out on top is Nimbyism and a disregard for the people we kill overseas.

alien_concept said:

That is rather a strawman argument there man. We do get to complain about the source of our energy if that source is poisonous and deadly. The dependency on oil has been orchestrated because the US economy is backed by oil dollars. No matter how bad it got and all of the deaths and wars it has caused, it does not justify fracking.

David Letterman on Fracking

Mikus_Aurelius says...

As long as we Americans want to waste cheap electricity and drive SUVs, we don't really get to complain about where it comes from. Sure, fracking needs some common sense regulation, but let's talk about how many people have died to maintain our supply of cheap foreign oil.

This is self centered NIMBYism at its worst. Either put solar panels on your house and drive a Volt, or shut up.

SF The BestCityEver Turns into Gotham for Batkid

Mikus_Aurelius says...

The homeless are pretty mobile. If there's a lot in your city, it's probably because they chose to be there. Conversely, cities generally don't solve their homelessness problems by building them all houses. They do it by making it so inhospitable that they leave.

artician said:

This is awesome.
I really like SF, but I don't think it can be considered the best city ever until they get rid of the piles of homeless people there first.

TPP is primarily a way of strengthening ties with counties that might otherwise be economically (and later otherwise) reliant on a stronger and more aggressive China. If these particulars are true, that's a shame because the treaty will not pass the Senate, nor should it. However, the Russian state is hardly a neutral party in this. They border the Pacific too, and you'll notice they weren't highlighted in red.

Louis C.K.'s Girls Can't Have Cell Phones

Mikus_Aurelius says...

I agree with this so much. I've had students who got the shakes when they had no one to talk to and weren't allowed to use their cell phones (like when waiting for the rest of the class to finish an exam). People need to spend some time in their own heads once in awhile.

Samuel L. Jackson on The Purple Lightsaber

Mikus_Aurelius says...

Didn't Raven's Jedi Knight games have yellow and purple light sabers all over the place? I wonder how they got away with that.

daxgaz said:

I can attest, I worked at lucasarts around that time. for a game we were making, we had made a light saber color generator that let the player pick their own personal color. George sent an email to us that said we had to nix that and that there were only red for bad, green or blue for good and purple for Mace Windu. we had to kill the whole system and remove it from the game. it was a bummer for us, but I guess it kept things consistent so that's ok.
