Looks like some confusion going on Firefly said "license" NOT "sell" any rights to the characters. Licensing would have allowed for him to maintain full creative control but made millions on merchandising and movie or television projects.

I think your are fogetting about Michael J. Fox and William Shatner (just watch Boston Legal they are both on it, Fox makes a few cameos).
