Vuvuzelas: the tiny plastic horn "ruining" the 2010 World Cu

Friesian says...

I really really dislike the vuvuzela. It's made it nigh on impossible to hear the commentary during some of the games, and I had to stop watching the last 20 minutes of the South Africa v. Mexico game as my brain was pounding.

They also drown out singing fans, which in my opinion are far more entertaining, and contribute to the atmosphere much more than the locust plague of biblical proportions. There were hints of songs breaking through the cacophony during the England v. USA game, and it really improved the viewing experience (let's just not talk about Green )

Finally, the players themselves say they don't like them.... The French team bemoaned the fact that they couldn't get any sleep, nor communicate during the game, while other players have also spoken out against them.

There's also the "oh no they damage your hearing" argument, but I'm less into that as a reason to get rid of them. Football games have always been noisy, and air horns (and drums) can easily reach similar (if not quite the same) decibel levels. It's more the incessant droaning on and on that really gets to me.

I'd love to hear what some South African players think of them. The man with the fashion sense said that the players love them, but I simply can't believe that unless I hear it from the players themselves - it just seems ludicrous to me.

It looks a bit suspicious to me... Not in that it was faked, but to me it seems more likely that this explicitgamer website made it? The uploader was immediately all "lol best rick roll ever, check out my website". I know custom maps have been about for a while, but I have no idea if this would be possible to do for an end user. Either way, I'm sceptical.

David Mitchell Talks About His Haircut

Friesian says...

Living in a foreign country where I can only speak a bit of the language, I HATE getting my hair cut. I'll put it off for so long, just in case I get back to an English speaking country where I can actually ask for precisely what I want.

Even in France, they still say "Quand est-ce-que le derniere fois que vous prendre un coiffure" or somethnig like that... They're judging me! Yes, so it was 4 months, sorry I didn't give you 30 euros any sooner, but you make me so uncomfortable!

CES 2010: Reporter breaks unbreakable phone!

Friesian says...

Ah yes, the stiff upper lipped'ness required to say "oh no, absolutely *laugh*" when you have your entire pitch completely disproven in about 3 seconds is without a doubt, 100%, British.

I do like that he doesn't take himself too seriously and doesn't suddenly embark on a "ah, but the angle of intrusion into the corner of the fish tank coupled with the structural integrity you provided with your hand ensured it would break, but that would NEVER happen in normal use" kind of damage limitation strategy. Instead he pretty much says "oh shit, you broke it, way to show us!".

Perhaps foolish, but it gives me the impression that this particular phone is back to the drawing board and when it comes out it will be even more guaranteed to be unbreakable.
