"I'm bleeding out of my f@$king balls, dude!"

DonanFear says...

Yup, the board flipped up and he landed on it so hard it broke in half! Ouch!

The injury probably isn't very traumatic. For starters he can still walk just fine, and judging from the thickness and angle of the board the probability that he'll have a carreer as a castrato is pretty small. He probably just tore up his inner thigh a bit and that's why he's bleeding.

I have to say, I wonder where the PC beeper / tandy examples came from. Of all these I actually kind of prefer those versions, but I also think it sounds way better in this video than it ever did from my beeper back in the day... Where's all that bass coming from, for one?

He probably just recorded the signal directly using an emulator like DOSBox. Some PCs had some pretty decent speakers but most used a tiny piezo.
The PC can generate a square wave anywhere between 18.2Hz and way into the ultrasound range, if the physical loudspeaker can play it is another question.

Speaking of PC sounds, I remember the first time I played Pinball Fantasies on a PC without a sound card... I couldn't believe my ears! Back in those days all you got from the speaker was some "beeps" and "boops" but using PWM and a lot of wizardry the guys at Digital Illusions made it sound like a proper sound card and were playing MODs on it straight from the Amiga version.

Incredible physics engine demos from Carrara 8

DonanFear says...

Real-time physics engines have to "cheat" a lot to get enough speed. This isn't real-time so it can use loads of processing power to get better precision and use more advanced calculations.

Solid cubes and spheres are probably the easiest objects to simulate. I want to see some fluids and soft squisy stuff.

That's norweigan. He said they have trouble throwing stuff away, now that they're moving they had to get rid of some stuff but they managed to keep most of it. At the end she said they only have to make one 10 mile* trip. The rest sounded like the Swedish Chef to me...

Bladeless fan

DonanFear says...

It basically has a scaled down vacuum cleaner motor in the base.
It sure sounds like a vacuum cleaner. They are wearing clip microphones that are designed to not pick up external sounds and you can still hear it.
"It's a lot gentler" means it's weaker than a regular fan too.

Weaker, louder and a LOT more expensive... but it looks cool!

Penn & Teller Bullshit - Organic Food

DonanFear says...

It's really simple, locally grown is way better. Organic or non-organic doesn't matter.

Support your local farmer or grow your own stuff. If you go to the supermarket and buy "organic" stuff, you're just wasting your money.

Bye bye electrical sockets. I shall not miss you

DonanFear says...

Year to year and a half? Bullshit! I've been hearing about stuff like this being ready "any day now" for at least 5 years...

You Know What's Bullshit? Printers.

DonanFear says...

Cheap inkjets are horrible, but try printing photos with a laser printer...
And a lot of color laser printers print tracking dots on every page you print. Yay!

Cheap b/w laser printers are ok, but if you need color don't buy the cheapest inkjet printer/scanner/fax/toaster/radio all-in-one POS you find, spend a little extra cash on a proper inkjet printer (without a ton of built-in crap).
