Dispatches - 'Is torture a good idea?' (49.03)

Baqueta says...

If you ask me, Americans should be tortured for their crimes against spelling. It would be great if Jack Bauer could be the one to do it, too...

To answer your question bamdrew, both are said here. However, I'm not sure if 'disoriented' is a genuine English word: I've a feeling it's one of those damned Yankee spy-words which has snuck back across the Atlantic to befoul our great mother tongue.

Jackie Chan Drunken Boxing

Baqueta says...

This is from Drunken Master 2, Choggie. The original version of the movie suggested pretty plainly that Chan (as Wong Fei Hung in this film) got brain damage from the industrial alcohol he drinks. Not so surprisingly, this was cut from the US version...

Blackadder - How WWI started

Baqueta says...

I love this show, but it's weird that I'm not a great fan of anything else I've seen by Ben Elton or Richard Curtis. Probably it's thanks to the amazing talent in the cast of this show.

Speaking of which, it's also weird seeing Hugh Laurie in this since seeing him playing House. Does... not... compute.

Burning a candle at both ends

Baqueta says...

My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--
It gives a lovely light!

Ju jutsu

Baqueta says...

I thought it was a pretty good clip. My one reservation with Jujutsu (wikipedia tells me this is the current standard spelling) is that they *always* train wearing the Gi. Training with one is fine, until you're fighting someone who is shirtless, when suddenly your options are drastically reduced.

tony jaa is a god

Baqueta says...

Tony Jaa would be the first guy to say that what he does in the movies isn't 'real' Muay Thai - I've seen a couple of interviews with him where he's pointed it out. Some of it is a reasonably fair representation, but the acrobatics and the jumping kicks are much more akin to wushu, capoeira, free running, or tricking.

The guy has an undeniable talent, and I really loved Ong Bak. The Protector (aka. Ong Bak 2) had some great fights, particularly the 5-6min one-shot scene that southblvd mentioned. The problem with The Protector was that it was seriously malnourished on plot - even by the (not high) standards of martial arts movies.

Once Upon a Time in the West. Final Showdown

Baqueta says...

A truly classic movie.

I think it would be worth putting a spoiler warning on the tags/title. Not everyone will have seen this film already, and the whole harmonica thing is undeniably a spoiler...

How to get knocked out before the bell

Baqueta says...

I'm not sure who I have the most disdain for right now: the outstandingly insecure Herring, or the dimwitted Nakao. If you're gonna try to rile the other guy up as much as you can, whilst standing a few inches away from him, be aware that he may try to sucker-punch you!
