You Suck At Photoshop - Vol 5

9547 says...

I would say no about the guerrilla marketing thing. If you read the Phebco website, you will see that its content has been randomly generated. All the pages are made of snippets that look like they were passed through Google Translation. It's just here for the Hoyle email address.

MyDamnChannel.com was created by a bunch of TV producers. They're just people doing TV, but tailored for the web. Nothing more. The "You sujck" series just happens to be spot on for this format, so they're milking it a little.

Finally, Jet Li and Jackie Chan in the Same Movie

9547 says...

"OK, I have this incredible scenario: Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the same movie!"
"And...?"
"That's it. That's the scenario"
"That's short"
"That's OK. They'll just portray some stereotyped characters from their early career. Like, I don't know, a dead serious leader and a funny drunken guy"
"Who will they fight?"
"Whoever...we'll just rip off stuff everyone knows about but no one has seen, and call that 'homages'. They'll just fight East Chamber Qing guards led by, say, a bride with white hair, in never-before-seen places like a Chinese inn or a bamboo forest. And we'll add some tasteless bimbos here and there"
"Good enough"
"Also, Shaolin monks"
"What for?"
"I really don't know, but no stereotyped Hollywood kung-fu movie would be complete without Shaolin monks"
"Deal. But they need to speak English"
"And they all speak English. Wait. Actually, sod Chan and Li, they'll be the sidekicks, and the hero will be an American white male. An American Dragonball kid. It will be directed by the guy who did Stuart Little"
"Genius"

I predict it will suck. Unless you have actually seen Li's and Chan's period pieces, in which case it will suck TERRIBLY.

OMG - It´s the Pulsating Red Dot!!!

Your are offended because The Onion mocks journalists for being disconnected from reality (especially when catastrophes happen)? I don't get your point here.

If you feel concerned about this, may I suggest that you go watch it directly on Youtube, and rate it 5-stars there? It will help getting it promoted on the front page, and reach a larger audience.

The true Ronin

9547 says...

Four of the six movies were directed by Kenji Misumi (who made many of the Zatoichi movies), and thus are visually quite stunning. It feels like watching a Japanese Sergio Leone, in that they do not show their age and still look very modern.
I must add that the soundtrack in all six films is absolutely fabulous.

Planet of the Arabs: How Hollywood Sees the Middle East

9547 says...

I dont see the point in this video. There always has to be an enemy in such movies.

I would agree if not for that little brief beneath the video that some seem to miss entirely:
Out of 1000 films that have Arab & Muslim characters (from the year 1986 to 2000) 12 were positive depictions, 52 were even handed and the rest of the 900 and so were negative.

90% of all Arab/muslim characters in movies are depicted negatively. Try to imagine the outrage this would cause if this would happen to Hispanic or Black people. Or Jews.
Of course this clip has a few weaknesses, not the least of which is that said brief should be in the goddamn movie, not next to it. It should also back its statement with a few sources. And as Farhad pointed out, the main problem is the overuse of stereotypes by Hollywood. Russians are probably not too far from the 90% mark either.

Ron Paul on the Bhutto Assassination

Ron Paul on the Bhutto Assassination

9547 says...

Ron Paul's answer is sensible (both politically and morally), but I'm gonna upvote this for another reason:

Poor journalistic standard.

"Wouldn't you be at all concerned, congressman, by a Taleban-like or an Al-Qaeda-like islamic fundamentalist regime taking charge of Pakistan?"

Does this guy even understands the news he reads to the public? Ms Bhutto has been assassinated precisely because of her popularity. Despite running against both the head of state and a former prime minister, she was polling somewhere above 60%. A woman. Not exactly conservatively-dressed and not much pro-Taleban either. And on top of that visibly backed by the ever-unpopular USA. Sixty percent. Her death sparked nation-wide riots. But hey, after that "the Taleban are gonna seize power"! What a woo-woo. Seriously, who gave this guy a press card?
