Poking a Stick Into The 'Hive Mind'
Today my Newsweek arrived. In it is a piece written by Steven Levy called “Poking a Stick Into The 'Hive Mind'”. Since VideoSift is toying with the adoption of a hive logo, I thought it might be interesting to the rest of you.

When I read the first four words I thought you were about to say VS got a shout-out in Newsweek.... which made me feel so dirty for a moment.
I really wasn't aware of the term as such until reading my Newsweek. Here's what's in Wikipedia.

I think the term "Digital Maoism" is pretty funny -but I definitely disagree with the negative slant (of course).
Theres nothing i have seen from the videos posted and voted highly for that would tend to appeal to our lowest common denominators.. Infact quite the opposite, that only the unique vids are sifted to the top, ones that are undeniably entertaining or informative.
Things like videosift and the internet go hand in hand because of the vast amounts of spam, like my inbox and the spam filter. That Lanier dude is a loopy attention seeker imo.

I agree ren - one of the accusations about the "hive mind" is that it breeds uniformity. This was brought up in a brief snark post on the Seattle Post Intelligencer's blog: http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/buzz/archives/105793.asp
We get lumped together as having all the same links as Digg Video and Google's top whatever. I left a comment saying that I thought the discussions the videos inspired were more important than the uniqueness of the vids.
And actually, from the screenshot they posted, I would say we have a pretty big variance from the other "top" lists.
