Wow, SG, you really were MIA for a while. Yes, the new member queue was a bit too harsh/discouraging given that most of our new members have no bad intentions, so now new members have an almost normal account. The only caveats are 1) they can only queue a single video at a time until one escapes the queue (you see the big red probation "P" in the queue; use the checkbox to select only these videos), and 2) they can not vote for other new/probation members until after their first video is published.

With these restrictions, it has become much more difficult for weevils to make their way into the sifter.

Cool. It's nicer to the newbies when once they had to take the heat for the "weevils" bad behavior. For the most part, VS has been very lucky, (or skillful) in keeping the mischief out.
