I think videosift already has too many pieces of javascript responsible for animating/shrinking/expanding/whatevering various content elements. The site is already kinda slow because of it, and frequently those things break for me.

i see where you're coming from direpickle, but i sense an HTML5 revolution coming. I don't know the nitty gritty of the coding, so i'm not sure if it would be a non-html thing (jscript) or not.

Funny you should mention something like this, because I've been doing it for a while now, for exactly the same reason you state: Bigger embeds (+ an extra vid per row in gallery mode). Basically what I did was write a style that has the sidebar slimmed down to a 4th of its width and have it expand when I mouseover it.

i would be very interested to use that css you conjured, should you be willing to share. (i know little-to-nothing about css at the moment)
