Excerpt From Matt Taibbi's New Book on Christian Right

Came across this while crawling through the interwebs tonight.

""Let me ask you a question," he said. "Why do alcoholics give birth to alcoholics? Why do the fatherless give birth to the fatherless?" He paused. "There are some people out there who will tell you it's genetics. It's in our genes, they say. Well, I tell you, it's not genetics. It's a generational curse!"

Fortenberry then started in on a rant against science and against scientific explanations for cycles of sin. "Take homosexuals," he said. "Every single homosexual is a sexual-abuse victim. They are not born. They are created — by pedophiles."

The crowd swallowed that one whole."

Definitely going to be the next book I read, once I finish Infidel.

Regarding that first quoted paragraph - I recently translated a lecture about that specific phenomenon ("generational curses") which is usually referred to as "carrying out a family's legacy". It's this psychological thing (obviously), where people have been led to believe that, for example, if all men of previous 2-3 (or more) generations in the family have been alcoholics, every man/boy will become one. That's just an example, same goes (not necessarily, but oftentimes) with obesity, lack of education, unemployment, even poverty. Through random remarks parents may bore this sense of doom into their children and the vicious cycle continues.

Of course, attributing this to homosexuality is ludicrous at best. So is trying to equal gay and pedophile. No, wait, scratch that, it's not funny at all, more like a criminal offense, especially if specifically directed at someone.

Nothing like using half the evidence to support your cause. I think most psychologists would agree these things propagate partly from genetic and partly from learned experience. of course there is never a guarantee someone will turn out a particular way even if both the environment and their genetic makeup would seem to say they will.

The homosexual claims are mostly complete crap. The only thing I can see is that it could introduce someone who is most likely homosexual, to homosexuality in the worst way possible. To say all homosexuals have been sexually abused is just ludicrous.
