Dupe pool needed

Just randomly browsing and have found a few dupes today that makes me wonder if we can't improve the presentation of these videos and list them in a nice way that diamonds can deal with.

So we have a dead pool that lists dead videos. Can we not have a Dupe pool (yes I'm not good at nomenclature).

If you find a dupe you *dupe it. Then you find the other video and *dupe (link of first video here).

Maybe gold starred members can do this.

Both videos, and this is the important and cool bit, appear side by side in the dupe pool listing. Comments are there for discussion and for diamonds to do their *dupeof thing.

Once *dupeof is successfully invoked we can replace the discarded video embed with some sort of image/text e.g R.I.P. The comments are preserved as a record of what happened.

You can also filter on current or fixed dupes, the default always being current, as in ones that need fixing.

[yet another edit] This would nicely encapsulate discussions like http://www.videosift.com/talk/Duplicate-Ruling

You're right in saying that this dupe problem needs a solution, but I don't see the benefit of a showcase "dead pool" for dupes, especially since that place would only be useful to those who can invoke the dupeof invocation. Instead I'd suggest that every member (or x starpoints and above) gets the power to mark a video as a dupe of another video (It could say something like "This video has been marked as a dupe of _link to original_" on the dupe's page).

In addition, 250ers and above could have a link in their profile page (or somewhere else) that'll give them a listing of all the videos that have been marked as dupes.

This is pretty much what I'm saying though I disagree about the value of a "dupe pool". I think the listing *would* be useful as simply flagging individual videos doesn't provide a context to list dupes or provide a forum for discussion.
This should make it easier for diamonds to do the dupeof invocation as the case for merging the videos will have been clearly made and you retain a clear history of what happened.

I still don't understand what benefit 100-star members and below will have from this section dedicated to dupes? The listing part, as I mentioned, can be done in a simpler way. As far as discussions are concerned: The only discussions concerning dupes are the "dupe or no dupe" ones and they fit perfectly into the comment section of the videos in question.

^I think it's useful because it presents complex information in a pleasing way that is transparent to one and all. The benefit is both that (dealing with the dupe process and gathering the metadata in one place) and making the sift a better place. In terms of comments alone it seems neat to seperate the dupe discussion from comments on the video.
If I see a dupe and leave a comment it might not register with the right person. I've got to start PMing people, then get a diamond involved and we have the dupe playlist. All of this made me feel we can surely instigate a process that helps flag dupes swiftly, resolves the problem elegantly, provides context for action and a history.
Overall it should be of benefit to *everyone* much like the dead pool or any other feature on the site (even though most of us don't visit that section).
