A Quality Voting System
Is there a way in which the community as a whole can go ahead and say x% of Videosift members agree on the issue of a *graphic tag? I think a poll feature, if not just for fun would be a great idea here on the Sift. I would love to see an example such as "Who do you think will win the Stanley Cup?" or "Who is your pick as the next US President?" and even "Would you be for or against the allowance of a *graphic tag?"
I believe the community as a whole here is strong, it would allow for some debate but also serve as a great base for who would be in favor of new issues that come up from time to time on the Sift.
Blog away!

A built-in polling system would be better in my opinion, as often - the answer is multiple choice.
ok, I'm teasing Jonny a little.. You guys heard my idea. Let em post and blog it if it's not appropriate. Then it must pass a goldie vote to return. If you're going to do *graphic...then it's to blog, not to label. *graphic could be an invocation as a heads up for possible questionable material only. That's my two cents. Cheers!
I love the idea of having a general polling feature. Should we create a poll to decide whether we should have a polling feature?
I dunno twiddles, perhaps we need to have a vote on that.
^Yeah, but then we'd need to vote to see whose votes count more. Maybe we could just take a poll to see whose votes count more for seeing if we should take a poll?
Take one poll. Only the people who voted have votes that count. Apply those votes to all future polls automatically without having to ask opinions. Flame people for the judgments implied in the automatic vote allocation.
On a more serious note, the 2 key issues with using the data that I see, are that any poll is only representative of the people that got around to voting, not the community at large, and so shouldn't be taken to be such, and that the wording of the questions is vital. That said, the whole of this site is our plaything, and no kittens were harmed by the site or site activities. Polls can be fun. So if coding support up isn't a pain, id be for it.
*quality, the poll is a great idea.
Awarding thesnipe with one star point for this contribution to Sift Talk - declared quality by Fjnbk.
@dag My idea really was for a built in polling system, something that you would have to be logged in to use and could be for both serious and fun topics.
When I meamt voting I may have thrown some of you off, I don't want to make the sift into congress! I'm just brainstorming a fun way of gathering opinions on a larger scale into a nice small space.
@swampgirl: the *graphic/*raw command was meant/is going to be a command similar to *NSFW so videos that fall under that heading are marked as a warning and users are then capable of filtering them out if they so choose. For videos that are potentially waaaaaay to violent or gratuitous then the *blog command would be used just as it is used now, and the vid would be sent to SiftTalk... after this then, we could either instate your goldie voting system (automatically perhaps), or the blogger could some how spawn a poll like snipe is proposing.
Either way, I've thought for a while now that having the ability to set up a poll that is tied into the sift database and ensures that each member gets one vote would be a good feature, both to be used in settling debates, and also for the fun of it... there are all kinds of possibilities.
Just as Raven points out, it opens up a whole realm of possibilities that I would like to see here on the sift. Not only would it be for the fun of things but for meaningful topics to get a nice glance of what the entire community thinks on an issue while allowing a debate to continue.
Don't think I want to take away the debate, I want to strengthen it. If we can some how ensure one user/vote it would make for some interesting insight into our community.
As to the argument against a poll stating "that any poll is only representative of the people that got around to voting, not the community at large" I have to disagree. If the issue is strong enough and visible enough I believe people will vote.
If someone was to log into the sift, read the poll, pick from let's say 4 answers or so, then I think we just add more a sense of community involvement in the Sift. I do not want to take away what a *blog or *raw/*graphic would do, this would be a separate issue. If a big decision like adding a *raw tag is to be used after some debate via SiftTalk I think a fair poll would add some more hard answers while making that decision.
polls ftb.
humans are not math. it's as simple as that.
