Lol, for me, I never realised I had a choice to not be catholic. Growing up in Ireland, you had normal people (i.e. catholics), those dirty protestant kids and that was it. Oh I was vaguely aware that there were other weird "foreign" religions, but it had zero impact on my daily life.
When I made my first communion and confirmation, I felt bad for the protestant kids who didn't get heaps of money from relatives and friends for completing a solemn religious ritual.


I think she thought I would eventually come around if I stuck with it. Her father was a preacher (7 daughters!), and it was kind of important to her, so I at least finished the whole confirmation process for her. Church was always such a tortuous, boring, monotonous affair. I still hate Sundays because I can't shake the memory of blue-haired elderly women with suffocating amounts of cheap perfume on. The lutefisk and lefsa feeds were always awesome though.

Hey @Fletch, thank you for sharing this. What I can tell you is that your church failed to teach you the most important thing, which is how to have a personal relationship with God. Rituals and classes don't make you a Christian. To be a Christian you have to be born again;

This is a supernatural rebirth, a complete recreation making you into a new man. It isn't something you learn about, it is something the Holy Spirit works within you when you truly accept Jesus into your heart. A man or a church can't do this for you; that's why confirmation, and other such rituals, are completely meaningless and ultimately a stumbling block to anyone who doesn't know Christ. This is why you left the Lutheran church in the first place, because following their precepts didn't bring you to know God personally. You said it yourself; you don't believe in magic. That says it all. This is the tragedy of many who grow up in Christian homes, who turn their back on what they presume is a dead faith, because they were never taught how to have a experiential relationship with a living God.
To know God is to Him personally. You could pray: "Jesus, if you're everything the bible says you are, I will follow you". If you can't go that far, simply ask if what I've said is true. God will show you, if you sincerely want to know. You managed to pass through the Christian religion missing the entire point of why it even exists. Mormons assert that Jesus was not speaking to himself about being pleased with himself, but rather that God the Father was pleased in His son Jesus for being baptized while the Spirit of God descended upon Him (Jesus). This statement also implies that it (The Holy Spirit) was not there beforehand.

John 17:20-21 “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us”

Mormons believe that it is that perfect unity between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost that binds these three into the oneness of the divine Godhead.

There are probably a few people like Fletch here who feel the way he does; grew up in the church without ever discovering that there is a real God who actually loves them. This video on Mormonism demonstrates the emptiness of that kind of religion, that it is actually just some kind of sad farce. Rituals and creeds can't change a mans heart; only God can do that. I found a video on youtube just a little while ago for a book someone is promoting on this very subject. I've never read it but it seems like it would be helpful for anyone who has been through the rigors of religion but never found a personal relationship with God.
