Collegehumor Breaks Down Net Neutrality

RFlagg says...

Ummm... I'm confused. Does Trancecoach and others like him think that Netflix doesn't pay to access the Internet? That Google, Amazon, Netflix and the like all have a free access pass to the Internet? Or when they say "In other words, people who stream video should pay for it, and not the people who don't." are they talking about end users and not the companies paying millions to access the Internet already? Or are they confused on other aspects?

Perhaps some aspects of this video confused them...

Right now if a person pays $45 a month for 15Mps they should expect all that content delivered to them at 15Mps. The way the ISPs want to rig it, is they want to go to Netflix/YouTube/Google/Amazon and other services and make them pay extra to get to that 15Mps. If Netflix doesn't pay then the ISP slows that content down to 10Mps, even though the end user is paying for 15Mps access. They aren't coming to the end user, yet, and having them pay extra for streaming access as shown in this video, though I'm sure they'll triple dip that too eventually. (Another problem I have with the video, beyond suggesting they'll just charge the end user extra, is that Netflix and others are willing partners in this scam, when Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix and all the others have been the biggest ones to support Net Neutrality and are fighting against the cable companies, while the video seems to suggest they'll handing the money over willingly.)

And if they mean the end user... then a person not streaming and only needing access to basic text and web stuff can get the basic 3Mbps option for only $30 or 2Mps option for $15. Streaming users do pay extra already. They pay for the extra bandwidth... if all you do is browse Facebook and tweet and the like and are using the 15Mbps or higher plans than you are an idiot. The end users do pay. As do the content companies like Netflix and YouTube/Google, Amazon and the rest...to the tune of millions a year. Yes, the content itself is far more expensive. For Netflix streaming a movie is cheaper than sending the DVD, postage is semi-cheap, but the people cost a lot. Still, they pay to access the Internet just like everyone else. Nobody is getting a free ride. This is just the ISPs trying to double, and potentially triple dip fees, and Net Neutrality seeks to stop them from double and potentially triple dipping. Bad enough we have to put up with banks double dipping ATM fees...

Big companies like Google, Netflix, Amazon and the like can potentially pay the fees if they have to. The question then becomes can sites like videosift pay whatever ComcastWarner, Verizon, AT&T want? I know my little blog couldn't pay extra... not that my site's users would need more than the 3Mps plan, if that, to access most of the content... save of course when I embed a YouTube video I made.

TLDR: The end user already pays extra if they stream above and beyond what an end user who doesn't stream pays. Also Netfilx, Amazon, Google and the like all pay millions to access the Internet, they don't get their access for free. What the ISPs want to do is tell Netflix, if they want to reach that customer who's paying $40 for 15Mps access at the full speed that consumer is already paying for, then Netflix has to pay that consumer's ISP in ADDITION to the costs they are already paying. If they don't pay, then the consumer is given that content at a slower speed than what they are paying their ISP to get it at. The ISPs are trying to double dip, and someday may triple dip. Net Neutrality would stop the ISPs from doing that.

'Enders Game' Writer's Ridiculous Racist Rant Against Obama

bcglorf says...

But every single quote that TYT ran there was from the AFTER part of the article where Card has clearly stated this is the fictional account of what the future under Obama would be like in the event that he was a Stalin or Hitler. Prior to that Card just discussed his own opinion, with strong right leanings, but hardly any worse than is daily said against Bush by Cenk.

Bold face lying about what Card said is not made OK because he happens to be a republican that believes the Iraq war was justifiable and that the media outside of Fox has given Obama a free ride.

Procrastinatron said:

@L0cky @bcglorf

It's disappointing that TYT didn't mention the context, but it's also facetious to claim that the article was purely a thought experiment.

Yes, he does say the following in the beginning of the article: "No, no, it's just a silly thought experiment! I'm not serious about this! Nobody can predict the future! It's just a game. The game of Unlikely Events."

...But the rest of the article is spent stating opinions and things that are just outright wrong as if they are completely factual and true.

There're no "let's just consider for a moment that..." in the article, nor are there any what-ifs. He simply goes from claiming that Iran will nuke Israel if the US doesn't step in, to claiming that Obama is, effectively, a dictator.

And all of this craziness takes part during the set-up for his "thought experiment." This is the context that Orson Scott Card himself provides us with.

It was very low for TYT to skip over the fact that this is, in part, a thought experiment. However, it is also false to claim that it was just a thought experiment, and nothing more.

Mieders Alpine Coaster - Frustrated Guy Crashes

newtboy says...

The crash looked like the best part to me. I just found myself wanting him to stop for one minute, let go of the brake, and just go full bore to the bottom yelling "NO BRAKES", ramming and then pushing them at full speed. This is a roller coaster, not a sight seeing slide. You are not supposed to stop to look at scenery repeatedly. It completely ruins the ride for those wanting to ride instead of inch down the hill, and it is dangerous for both parties. I would have demanded another free ride or my money back. (then again, I likely would have been thrown out for mangling the sleds and injuring the other rider).

CEO Threatens To Kill Over Gun Control

VoodooV says...

yeah, the more they get unhinged and irrational, the more they hurt their cause and demonstrate to the world that they're mouthbreathers.

and once again they get into this deranged strawman argument that a total gun ban is happening.

it's not.

no one wants your guns. People just want some more assurances of gun safety.and that your guns aren't going to fall into the wrong hands. Time to attach some responsibility to your beloved rights. The more people like the moron in this video become unglued, the more people start to think maybe its guys like this that are mentally ill and need to have their firearms confiscated.

You had to know you weren't going to get a free ride forever. Even if this current push fails to enact any meaningful change, you have to acknowledge that the 2nd amendment (at least in it's present form) is living on borrowed time.

it's an amendment after all, eventually it too will be amended. Guess what, we don't give blacks 3/5ths of a vote anymore either.

times change.

Oh and btw, you do know what the term is for people who use the threat of violence to effect political change is right? They're called terrorists. So here's a tip. If you want to protect your guns, maybe you need to be eloquent and rational instead of threaten to fire the first shot.

just a suggestion

Ted Koppel: Fox News 'Bad for America'

shinyblurry says...

There's a reason America doesn't trust the mainstream media anymore and it not just one organization:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/157589/distrust-media-hits-new-high.aspx?ref=image

Yes, Fox has an obvious conservative bias and most of the other networks have an obvious liberal bias. If you want proof of a liberal bias, watch the Univision forum interview with President Obama:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0912/81470.html

Contrasting it to the softball interviews he usually gets, it's amazing to watch the president get grilled like that. Amazing because if you've been relying on the mainstream press for your information, you have forgotten what real journalism looks like. It's also proof positive of the free ride that President Obama has been getting since 2008. Yes Fox News is guilty of the very same thing on the other side of it.

But it's almost criminal when you consider how the mainstream press has been carrying water for President Obamas narrative about the video being the cause of the Libyan embassy attack, when it was obvious from the start it was a terrorist attack. I think they've been suppressing the story so as not to damage his re-election chances. What I mean by that is they didn't want to tread on the campaign narrative of President Obama being some kind of foreign policy giant, and that he had the Muslim problem solved. Obviously he hasn't solved that problem, and killing Osama Bin Laden didn't defeat Al Qeada. His systematic withdrawal of American influence from the region has left a power vacuum that groups like the Muslim brotherhood and Hezbollah have been more than happy to fill. Coupled with the Iranian nuclear threat and the failure of the sanctions to stop them, you have an unmitigated disaster on foreign policy, but out of the mainstream press you hear not a peep. If any of this happened under Bush the press would have murdered him but in this case they are running defense because they want to keep their guy in office. Considering all of this I don't think they have much credibility left.

Two Canadians discover the US is now a police state.

Sagemind says...

All due respect but I take offense to you bringing race into this.

1). You don't know this guy's race, so to start, you are off base.
2). I don't understand how you think white people don't understand authority. I've never seen a get out of jail free card. That assumption is a generalization and is therefor again off base.
3). I know and respect border officials and know how to respond when they ask their questions. It has NOTHING to do with race. It has to do with respect of authority. Something this guy let slip and boom, he's detained. As expected as anyone of any ethnicity would be detained.

I (as a white guy) have never expected a free ride because of race and as such always respond or act in the required manner expected of myself as needed. Respect gets respect.

You are right - "He doesn't understand this situation at all"
But this is NOT a Minorities Game. This is an Authority Game. plain and simple.
Throwing derogatory race comments around isn't necessary.

Thank you for your consideration.
(Again, all due respect, I'm not trying to start something - just pointing out that calling out race is off-base and may be called racist in itself)

>> ^legacy0100:

WHITE PEOPLE ARE SOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY!!!! LOL He doesn't understand this situation at all!! LOL!
Authority figures don't want back talk or any type of attitude from you. Why? Because they are being fair. I know that sounds fucked up but hear me out. The ironic part about being fair is that in order to treat everyone equally, including illegal immigrants and smugglers, they have to be tough to EVERYONE so that they wouldn't be accused of being bias or be accused of racial profiling. So more crimes & illegal activities going on around the border, the tougher they have to treat regular innocent citizens. So look at it from a socio-economic perspective rather than just one isolated encounter. And be happy that everyone is now being treated equally. Yay.
The bottom line is that the officer is being fair, and the man IS resisting the officer. The funny part is that he thinks he's totally clean, and expects a special 'White Canadian' treatment, which he is denied. And he's raising a fuss over it because he just found out that he isn't SPECIAL anymore.
Minorities know all too well how this game goes, and I just find it fascinating how this Canadian couple (assumed Caucasian) just can't grasp the concept that he was defying the officer's orders just now, and has no fear of resisting an authority figure. This is such a fundamental difference in culture because every minority in North America would have been familiar with this drill before. Ready your papers, yes sir, no sir, show that you cooperate with the authorities, and be on your way. Also, most minorities are familiar with the repercussions of disobeying an authority figure, and would like more than anything to avoid that situation as the laws aren't so gentle and understanding when it comes to minorities. So minorities know exactly what to do in this situation.
However,(assumed non-minority) Canadian man thinks such treatment unto him is unfair and protests, demanding that the officer answer HIS questions instead of he answering the officer's questions. He sees the officer as his equal, and has no problem challenging him incessantly. I assume that he has never been treated this way before in his life, being treated just like the rest of the minorities have been for centuries. I just find this HILARIOUS. This just goes to show how divided our country really is, and how ironic to see that what is considered as normal practice to minorities, is deemed absolutely unacceptable to a white guy. Welcome to the life of minorities, friend!
Well perhaps he could take solace in the fact that everyone else being treated equally the same way in no regards to their race or ethnic country of origin. He should be happy this has happened to him (sarcasm!) Equality Achieved!

Bill Maher ~ New Rules (May 4th 2012)

SDGundamX says...

@Mikus_Aurelius

I think the purpose of tax write-offs for donating to charities is simply to encourage more people to give to charity. People who don't normally contribute to charity might do so if it's going to drop them a tax bracket. I don't think that takes anything away from anybody--everybody wins when people contribute to the public good and government doesn't have to get involved in the process.

In my opinion, spending hundreds of billions of dollars killing brown people on the other side of the world while giving corporations a free ride (effective tax rates of zero in many cases), on the other hand, is what's taking money from the food/shelter/college budget of middle class families.

Kony 2012 - A Financial Breakdown

Deano says...

>> ^sepatown:

i don't think he makes good points at all. without comparing those pie-charts to the pie-charts of other aid organizations, those percentage splits are meaningless. how does the layman watching the video know if 37% is a lot or not much? is 27% for awareness programs good or bad? who knows? how much of that 27% is essential for boosting their income?
also his problem with the Legacy Scholarship Fun is strange as well, he recognizes that it's a good program but has a problem with $1.1million being spent on 'only' 700-800 kids. once again, without context how do we know if that is bad? 1.1million by 800 kids is like $1400 bucks per kid, per year. that doesn't jump out at me as some insanely unjustifiable figure UNLESS YOU PROVIDE ME WITH CONTEXT which he fails to do, which is interesting because he spends some time attacking the fund for that exact thing.
the only thing more annoying than the people jumping to support this KONY thing by clicking 'like' and then feeling good about themselves are the people jumping just as quickly to the contrarian position and the demonizing this charity because they wanna be in that group that thinks that they're somehow smarter than everyone else because they've read on Reddit or a blog somewhere that Invisible Children's Accountability & Transparency only scored 2/4 on Charity Navigator and therefore must be a scam.

In a 12 minute video he's made some good points but it's clearly a starting point for a debate. He doesn't strike me as a contrarian but someone who's choosing to be reasonably sceptical.

Charities throughout the world too often get a free ride and I would not be surprised if the next big financial scandals are charity-related.

I haven't actually made it through the Kony video. I saw a twitter link with a breathless gushing exhortation to watch it and the first five minutes seemed to follow in that vein. I'd rather a more clear-headed appraisal rather than rushing to frame the subject emotionally.

TYT: Rep. Walsh Runs From Occupy Protesters

honkeytonk73 says...

Iron Maiden: Run for the hills.

White man came across the sea
He brought us pain and misery
He killed our tribes, he killed our creed
He took our game for his own need
We fought him hard, we fought him well
Out on the plains we gave him hell
But many came, to much for Cree
Oh will we ever be set free
Riding through dust clouds and barren wastes
Galloping hard on the plains
Chasing the redskins back to their holes
Fighting them at their own game
Murder for freedom the stab in the back
Women and children, a cowards attack.
Run to the hills - run for your lives
Run to the hills- run for your lives
Soldier blue in barren wastes
Hunting and killing's a game
Raping the woman and wasting the man
The only good "injins" are tame
Selling them whiskey and taking their gold
Enslaving the young and destroying the old
Run to the hills - run for your lives
Run to the hills- run for your lives

The moral of the story? They fucked over the Indians. Killed them. Took their land. Took their traditions. What makes us think they won't fuck the rest of us over too?

Riot Granny

bigbikeman says...

Know what occupy wall street is about?

ok. About the same thing. Loss of true democracy, giving the rich a free ride on the taxpayers back, blah blah blah. But you knew that. Not really that hard to figure out dude. google.com. Try it. It works. None of it is really that hard to figure out either....unless you have an agenda.

"no strong opinion", but they are "whiners". Ok dude. fuck off.
>> ^bcglorf:

Can someone explain the Greek riots to me? I've only followed far enough to have picked up that they are in opposition to the austerity measures being enacted by government? What I've heard sounds like the government spent so much on social services that it went bankrupt, and the protesters are angry that the government is now attempting to cut back it's social services.
I'm not of strong opinion on this like I am in many other situations, but the balance of what I've heard sounds like the anti-austerity protests are so much whining that everyone wants their free money and maybe if we shoot the messenger the economy will recover.

I often wonder about that and fast food. Maybe you've heard of the cheeseburger bill before, maybe not. And while Super Size Me seemed a bit exaggerated at times the results he was getting from his doctor were SCARY. And while things like cigarettes and alcohol come with warnings from the surgeon general, fast food, in spite of the evidence that it's horrible for you, is protected by the aforementioned bill AND the public is under-educated about how dangerous it really is.

It's just a matter of time before we move on to soylent green for the masses. Oh wait...

In reply to this comment by peggedbea:
the cost of food isn't high enough yet. historically, people are generally complacent with letting the ruling class do whatever as long as they can afford food and expect a reasonably brighter future. i wonder if part of the reason we subsidize agriculture is to keep food prices artificially low longer to avoid social unrest. and then there's fast food. which consistently remains cheap. my paranoid brain is starting to formulate fast food as social control conspiracies. also, google holodomor. and think about monsanto.

i think we've all given up on the "brighter future" part... and food prices keep fluctuating.. it's coming though, don't worry. the rest of us will join you soon. as soon as we can no longer afford a mcrib. >> ^rottenseed:

TDS: World of Class Warfare - The Poor's Free Ride Is Over

I don't think you're that far off. That seems like a reasonable hypothesis. Another thing that comes into play are our affordable "luxuries". Cable TV, microwaves, dishwashers, heating/AC...these things are now things that we risk by protesting/revolting. Why go outside and get shot at when we can watch Cosby reruns for hours on end?

Cosby? Shit, I'd rather get shot at.
