police detaining a person for no reason

Asmo says...

You can't understand why he feels that way?

You take umbrage to peoples perception of police officers, yes? You think it's grossly unfair that people classify all of you by the actions of the notable few?

Well here's a little news flash. You get to take off your uniform at the end of the shift. You can go to a restaurant or a shopping center and be perfectly fine with no one sitting around thinking you're a fascist police state tool because of what you wear rather than who you are.

The guy in the video? He doesn't get to take off his skin. He doesn't get to stop being viewed with suspicion, doesn't stop getting harassed by idiots who don't care for the truth and are purely in it to pick on people and raise revenue. He lives with people making assumptions about him 24/7 because of who he is, not because of what he does.

Dig deep down and find that empathy that seems to be lurking in there somewhere. Assuming your one of the good guys (and apologies but your posting history doesn't really support that), don't you feel a deep abiding embarrassment when you see these yahoos make every cop look worse because of their actions?

Yes, it's not fair that people will ascribe the actions of a few bad eggs to an entire population. Not fair for anyone that is victimised by it.

I don't understand why they trespassed this guy from UTA property however. I just don't see how that's legal.

The whole interaction is quite irritating because I have to agree with the hoodie guy, nothing makes sense.

Your Kid's Not Susceptible to Child Abduction... Right?

noims says...

A few things struck me as odd about that video, and then that stat at the end: 700 abductions a day seems way over the top. How many of them are by family members, false/mistaken reports, runaways? I had the impression it was more like 100 per year (I looked this kind of stuff up when my kid was born almost a year ago).

I'd be interested in seeing how many kids did and didn't go with him rather than the sample that showed his point (I know the yahoo article say 3 for 3, but I'm wary given the numbers above). Having their mothers right there talking to the guy probably made a difference too.

Generally untrustworthy video in my opinion, but it does show that kids - like everyone - easily forget what they've been trained to do in extraordinary circumstances. The trick is to make the decision come naturally using their own judgment rather than training (and no, I don't know how to do that).

Cat goes crazy for a can of olives

eric3579 says...

Found the video more enjoyable once i read this:

Both green olives (Olea europaea) and Pimentos (Capsicum annuum) contain isoprenoids that are structurally similar to the methylcyclopentane monoterpene nepetalactone, which is responsible for binding to receptors in you cat's vomeronasal organ and consequently the mind-altering effect your cat experiences.
These compounds are not unusual, although thie configuration varies widely between plant species.
These compounds resemble pheromones, and as such some of them function as a natural mock-pheromone pest repellents for the plant, which is likely how such high levels of these constituents within a plants' essential oils evolved.
The vomeronasal organ is what your cat (and most other animals with the exception of humans, although there is a small indented area and partial nerve channel where it would be, left over from our evolution) uses to sense pheromones, and is where the nepetalactone in catnip stimulates pheromone receptors resulting in space-kitty.

TL;DR - it is likely that either the green olives or pimentos have a chemical in their essential oil that is similar enough to the active chemical in catnip to have a similar effect on the same receptors in the part of kitty's nose that are responsible for catnip getting her high.

An unarmed thief got shot.

Should we be sad that this young criminal career was cut short?

He was told to get out of the street, he did not do so. He did not respect authority. Then went to the officer's car and grabbed him through the window and was shot.... I believe Brown thought the cop knew he had just committed a STRONG ARMED ROBBERY just a few minutes earlier and that's why he reached inside the window to grab the policeman. No one would grab someone and try to pull them into the car - especially not a policeman - Brown reached inside the police car and grabbed the officer. He was shot. Case closed.

Money & Debt: Crash Course World History 202

Trancecoach says...

Speaking of lawn mowing, here in California, it seems the government is playing a game of good old, "Heads, I win; tails, you lose:"

California homeowners threatened with a $500 fine for letting their lawn go brown (and thereby driving down the value of "their" own home) during the drought:

"On the same day the state approved mandatory outdoor watering restrictions with the threat of $500 fines, the Southern California couple received a letter from their city threatening a $500 penalty for not watering their brown lawn."

It seems that California has a specific (if unannounced to the public) policy of keeping housing prices inflated just to get people out of the state. (And of course, the state gets their $500 either way.)
