Stop Resisting

Mordhaus says...

They are almost always relieved or suspended, at least while the investigation is in process. Once the initial furor blows over, they are either quietly put back on duty or sometimes fired. Since most departments don't bother to blacklist them, they will simply find another place to be a cop.

Just like the two cops who killed the kid with the fake airsoft gun (Tamir Rice) both had prior incidents that, in any normal job would have prevented them from working in that field ever again. Look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Tamir_Rice and read the background of the officers. Both had incidents that should have made them unsuitable for duty, but they both were able to continue working and then were let off the hook by a grand jury after the shoo...murder of Rice. Since they were acquitted, the wonderful police unions mean they get to stay cops.

Now you tell me another field of employment that gets away with this. You might say the military, but generally if you screw up badly they will make you go away. There might be a cover up, but you are going to be kicked out, court martialed, or put in a dead end place where you will never advance out of nor have authority to make any important decisions. Politics is close, but if you aren't super high up in the food chain you will pay for it as well. Police, though, they will walk 99% of the time. Even the officer who shot the teen here in Austin that was wandering around naked and threatening people, he was only fired and this town is one of the most liberal towns in the USA. We've already established that a lot of police forces don't even bother checking with previous employers, so I expect he will be able to go someplace else and be a cop again.

The most fun thing? This has been going on for decades, hell, probably a couple of centuries. Only since the advent of video recording technology that was easily portable have we been shown the true nature of the beast. But, and forgive me as I can't find the exact quote, someone said something along the lines of that the majority of the public will forget anything in six weeks. Over and over we seem to prove that as we keep letting these people get away with impunity.

Best movie breakdown ever? Children of Men

Payback says...

The scene where a certain character is shot blew me away. All through the movie are huge, epic, wandering shots. Well over several minutes without a cut. Awesome film. Not for the easily distracted though.

Which is why I always enjoyed Children of Men. The fact that the show was so vivid and surreal the entire journey. When you can see the bad guy and his story at the same speed as the hero, and by the end it becomes a truth that we don't have to always follow the same beginning paths; we can switch and start, almost, an entirely new story...

Dumb Bike Thief

Don't drink and steal...and then wander around the area you stole the bike from, only to be spotted by local news camera guy who gets you to blurt out your guilty confession.

My younger self would probably have given it a hug after the kids wandered off.. alright maybe not a hug, but wiped the rubber-sole kick marks off and said sorry on behalf of my generation at least.

The Best (Or The Worst) Tiger Safari Ever

robbersdog49 says...

Awesome. It's amazing how close you can get to such a powerful wild animal.

In India and Africa the large game animals have learned to regard the vehicles in much the same way as they regard trees. they know they're there, they just don't bother with them in any way.

When we were in India on a tiger safari we had a very similar experience. The amazing thing was that people live and work in these forests. 100yds down the road from the situation in the video may be a party of women collecting firewood. Or one time we found a mahout looking for his elephant that had wandered off in the night!

Tigers are incredibly beautiful animals. they have a quality that sets them apart from lions and other big cats. They are so different in the wild to the animals you might see in zoos. If you've ever wanted to see what real natural beauty looks like then go and see the wild tigers, they're breathtaking.

Look, Sifty, I don't want to tell you how to do your job or anything, but...that video is long dead. Who in the dickens would have just wandered in upvoting comments on dead videos? I'd say "Thanks" for the Power Point, but I EARNED IT WITH MY RAPIER WIT.

He takes another huge toke on the half-pound doobie he always has within five feet of him and just smiles at you until you wander off.

He's like the anti-deGrasse.

Alligator Snapping Turtle vs Common Snapping Turtle

Stormsinger says...

In spite of the dozens of snappers that I've caught while fishing, or encountered while wandering creekbeds, I don't think I'd ever realized that they were alligator snapping turtles. I didn't think they got this far north...but seeing both, side by side, makes it clear that I've never actually gotten a close look at any other kind.

Fascinating video, in my opinion.

Black Man Vs. White Man Carrying AR-15 Legally

SFOGuy says...

Having been raised in a big city, I'm always astonished by the pedestrians, bikers, and drivers who wander by officers WITH THEIR GUNS PULLED AND AIMED AT SOMEONE---without thinking: perhaps this could be a bad place to be if it all goes sideways...

Crash Course - Taste and Smell

MilkmanDan says...

Very interesting...

I'm one of those people who is highly sensitive to perfumes / scents, which is sometimes called "multiple chemical sensitivity". I know that it isn't technically an "allergy", but other than that I honestly have no idea whether this whole thing is psychosomatic (all in my head), "real" but with a lot of additional input from mental/emotional states, completely real and tied in some way to the smells themselves, or completely real and tied in some way to the actual "chemicals" (in a chemistry sense) in the air. All I know is that there are a LOT of triggers for me where I can get one small whiff of something and know that I'm going to get a pounding headache.

Aggravation with that has often caused me to wonder if it would be possible to surgically or pharmacologically destroy or impair my olfaction senses, like what happened to the woman in the video, and cure the headache triggers. If the smells themselves are the triggers, it seems like that could work. If it is largely or completely psychosomatic, it could still work because I wouldn't know that I was being exposed to the smell triggers; one thing that I've considered is that I also get very angry if I'm in a private place like my home or otherwise trying to avoid triggers and somebody wanders in wearing some nasty shit and compromises the integrity of my safe zone. In public I know that I can't control what other people wear so I just try to get away very quickly from trigger smells, but in my own home I get ultra pissed if somebody comes in and stinks it up. I have wondered if that anger exacerbates or maybe even in some cases is the actual primary source of the headache symptoms. But anyway, even if that was the case, being able to cap or cut off my sense of smell would solve the problem.

The only way that the problem could persist AFTER surgically eliminating my sense of smell would be if the reaction is really to the chemicals themselves in the air. And then, that would be worse because I wouldn't have the warning system of smell telling me to get the hell away from perfume counters, ladies wearing the stuff, dudebros wearing shit like Axe, etc.

All in all, I don't actually think it would be worth the downsides. BUT, I must say I've really wondered about it when I've got a pounding headache after simply walking by somebody wearing perfume in line at a grocery store or whatever...

Cellphone Has Incredible Effect on Magnetic Ore

poolcleaner says...

If this wasn't fake, there would be magnetic golems wandering the now desolate wasteland of earth. We would all know the sting of the magnet golem. It would be common place. Your children would walk to school with anti magnet guns and ironic, perhaps rebellious ICP t-shirts.

Fallout vs Skyrim - Vault Dweller vs Dovahkiin

gorillaman says...

Alright, after two days this is still bugging me and I have to say it, but ignore this comment and stop reading here.

This is not Vault Boy. Vault Boy, also sometimes known as Fallout Boy before a terrible band ruined that for everyone, is the cute cartoon character in Vault-Tec promotional material. This is, presumably, the Lone Wanderer. It goes:

Fallout 1: The Vault Dweller
Fallout 2: The Chosen One
Fallout so-called-3: The Lone Wanderer
Fallout actually-3-slash-new-vegas: The Courier
