Comcast Repairmen Unconcerned Of Wrecks They Are Causing

greatgooglymoogly says...

Regardless if the comcast guys think they have enough cones out, they can SEE drivers are driving too fast for conditions. And when the slide, they are going to slide right into the boom truck they are working from. Only an idiot would not want to slow those drivers down 1000ft up the road so they don't hit the truck while somebody is up in the boom.

The guy with the videocamera is dumb for not just taking the cones and moving them himself though. Instead of 15 feet apart, make them 50ft apart maybe?

@Porksandwich I know I started my last comment directed at you, but honestly the first paragraph was the only part really directed at you. I'm in agreement with you -- there needs to be more empathy, more flexibility, more compassion, less prejudice, and better judgment exercised within the justice system, and nobody should be satisfied with the status quo.

@Matthu, I wasn't really directing the tail end of that rant at anyone in particular. It just seems like the comment thread on every "police doing something bad" video plays out the same way. It's always some form of "how do we stop these cops who're unaccountable and completely out of control?" when the video usually hasn't established anything at all about whether the officers involved are going to be held accountable, nor has it provided any kind of statistics that would allow us to draw conclusions about the overall trend in police brutality.

I'm genuinely interested in ways to reduce police brutality, or at least reduce the scale, but I can't really think of much to do about it except what we're already doing. I think the knowledge that virtually every citizen carries a digital videocamera with them at all times has probably massively reduced the number of cops stepping out of line, it's just that now when they do we get some really juicy video when cops step out of line, whereas before it was dry 2nd hand news reports, if anything. That leaves our monkey brains with the impression that things are getting worse, regardless of what the facts really are.

Ellen's emotional message regarding recent teen suicides

I deplore bullying.

However, I am beginning to think that the broadcasting of Tyler wasn't an example of homophobic bullying.

All the news reports say that Tyler was shy. I suspect in part due to past history with bullying or a need to hide his sexual identity.

Reports are coming out of the roommate's gay friends defending them.

I suspect that his roommate was more "congratulating" Tyler on finally scoring, and scoring with the one he WANTED to score with -- a guy.

I am ready to bet that if Tyler had been in there with a woman, the same stupid invasion of privacy would have happened, with the post also ending in "yay!" As in, yay for Tyler! Yay for coming out of your shell! Yay for "getting some."

Was it a horrific invasion of privacy? Oh yeah. Have stupid frat/college guys been doing this to their roommates (albeit without the internet to broadcast) as long as there have been videocameras?

Heck, there is a movie out now called The Virginity Project that is exactly this scenario.

I think the roommate was stupid. I also think this isn't an example of homophobic bullying.

I also think that if being gay weren't treated as such a sin, Tyler wouldn't have been so horrified at being "outed."

I grieve for all parties involved.

The Memristor Will Replace RAM and the Hard Drive

vermonter says...

jonny,

I think the part you are missing is the possibility of changes of order of magnitude. For example, what if I could just default to having a videocamera built into the edge of my eyeglasses and simply record everything I do 24/7 in beyond HD detail? Right now that would require far more memory than I can afford, but it would also eliminate much current note taking, minutes of meetings, even allow you to "go back in time" for snapshots.

What if I wanted to transmit that data over my cell phone to someone else to watch at the same time? What if 10 Billion people on Earth wanted to do the same thing?

I know squat about the memristor, but I do believe that the possibilities for computing technologies in particular are still ripe for orders of magnitude changes. It may be that vacuum tube computers were like the water wheel and transistors the steam engine. If so we still have a lot of room for improvement in efficiency and convenience.

More RNC pre-emptive police raids and detaining journalists

I'd like to see the formation of a volunteer citizens militia. You call a hotline set up by private donations which disseminates text messages to registered citizens, and they show up with automatic weapons, a lawyer, a copy of the constitution, and a videocamera to ensure that human/constitutional rights are not violated.

Maybe at some time in the past this role was filled by the police force, but that time has come to an end.

Underwater Helium-Fueled Tourette Syndrome - F*ck it's cold!

Woland says...

In reply to roto56:
it's bullshit. I've been to a depth of 150 ft around the same lat and it's much darker.

It all depends on the turbidity of the water.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbidity
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelagic

It can be darker at 150 ft than at 400 ft. Personally I've never been below 150 feet, but yes, I've seen it a LOT darker than in this video. It's all relative to a certain depth and turbidity, as well as any effect the videocamera's optics / filters might have on the perceived darkness.

Nonetheless, I don't doubt the authenticity of the video (with the possible exception as to their stated depth), because as I'm sure you know, at depths below 150 feet you generally use tri-mixes that include a large percentage of helium, and that several rebreather setups (and other enclosed mask systems) support closed-circuit voice communications. I just wish more tech divers would record their voice communications.

Minor detained for publicy displaying a %$*& Bush sign

I'm actually amazed here.. the cops showed amazing restraint. You cannot follow them in a crowd like that and get that close. They could have arrested that lady for interfering.

Anyways, I love how the cops threw out twice two made up laws. You can't videotape with audio in FL. (Yeah you probably can't audiotape a phonecall.. but they have small brains) There are local decency laws.. So maybe displaying signed with vulger words might violate those local laws. Just like I probably cannot put drawings of a penis in my front yard.

Usually, they would have just warned the dude and said get rid of that sign. Just like if your party is being too loud. I think the mom and the videocamera pissed them off.
