Kids Play PIE FACE SHOWDOWN!

Mordhaus says...

I'm wondering if they installed the hand backwards. It would make more sense to have a cup filled than a rounded surface that allows the cream to vibrate off.

What Clubbing Is Actually Like

Removing rusted nuts using a candle and a lighter

Mekanikal says...

From what I've read when you heat up the nut from the bottom and drip/hold the candle on top the heat kind of wicks the wax into the threads, the same way that solder/flux wicks when soldering copper.

Just make sure to clean all the wax off when putting the nut back on or it will vibrate loose.

The Tech That Could Fix One of Wind Power's Biggest Problems

newtboy says...

It's a guess, but I think because the blades are so short and wide, they produce more torque at much lower speeds, so yes, likely gearing is needed, but most turbines have some sort of transmission these days. Because the blades are so short and wide, they also don't go as fast under strong winds, there's more air resistance and far less tip speed. That means far less vibration and stress on the hub/trans.

SFOGuy said:

Why is this more auto governing for high wind conditions and yet effective at low wind speeds (and therefore avoidant of overspeeding or stressing the axle/mounting)? Because it's so much more compact? Lower forces over all?

And does the low wind/high wind envelope mean that someone has to be clever somewhere else? Like in forcing a transmission to gear up the speed at low wind speeds?

Sorry, not an engineer.

The song of the dunes

shagen454 says...

Love me some sand dunes. I've heard low droning sounds while out in Guadalupe sand dunes in central california and in Death Valley. I remember researching why and there were some theories - something about grain size (changes pitch), friction & amplification from a layer of moisture below the surface and sand collision upon the surface creating vibrations that in turn create a feedback loop of low frequency. Stony stuff, lol!

Comedians Sitting on Vibrators Getting Coffee

The Rotary Engine is Dead - Here's Why.

newtboy says...

The main advantage, power to weight...this one is HUGE for performance vehicles. Also in it's favor; reduced vibration (over piston engines), only two moving parts, no valve train, and the fact that it's 'exotic'.

EDIT: Cons: terrible mileage, bad emissions, loud (it's can't handle much back pressure, so you can't put on much of a muffler, and the unburnt fuel 'pops' loudly as it leaves the exhaust), hard to replace Teflon seals requiring a full teardown to replace, hard to find a mechanic that can work on them (especially if you need machining done), hard to find period (they're quite 'rare' compared to piston engines)....I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting or don't know.

So, what was the advantage of this engine type?

The Truth About Hymens And Sex

visionep says...

Hmm.. Hysteria, as I recall, the treatment for that was regular orgasms administered by a doctor using a vibrator.

Yep:

1) Depends
2) WHY?!?
3) Dunno. It shrinks as girls age, possible it helps keep germs etc out before, you know, anything else might need to go there.
4) The same way as women prolly. Winky Face. I'd wager men have probably _seen_ about as much, or possibly more, hymen (Hang on, plural of hymen? Hymens?) than women given-
a) I don't imagine it's actually that easy for women to see their own hymen - feel free to correct me on this ladies.
b) Gynecology, as indeed almost all of the medical specialist areas, has been the domain of men until recently.

Oh, and I did google it and I don't regret it because of this entry on the wikipedia page:
"In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, medical researchers used the presence of the hymen, or lack thereof, as founding evidence of physical diseases such as "womb-fury", i.e. (female) hysteria. If not cured, womb-fury would, according to these early doctors, result in death."

One wonders what treatment they might have prescribed for WOOOMB-FURY!!!!

Eminem's Lose Yourself in American Sign Language

Sagemind says...

You'd find yourself quite wrong.
A deaf person can feel the music. Turn it up and the vibrations are there, the beat and the tones.

It's just the words that are lost, and this type of interpretation brings it together. Above that, it's also not just the words, but the attitude and facial expressions which convey a strong feeling to the message of the music.

So, devils advocate: what is the point of signing music? Presumably the majority of people this is aimed at are deaf, and can't hear the melody. Ok, you can get the lyrics and the rhythm, but that's not really the music is it?

Eminem's Lose Yourself in American Sign Language

JustSaying says...

Just because you have to rely on sign language doesn't mean you can't hear any sound at all.
Also, sound is essentialy a form of vibration. Ever stood in front of the speakers at a Motorhead concert? You can feel the music, trust me.

What interests me: at the beginning of the video, before Eminem starts rapping, does she sign something like 'piano music, piano music, piano music'?

How Japanese Taiko Drums are Made

ChaosEngine says...

If you ever get the chance to see a good taiko group, go.

Kazuya Miura is right, nothing compares to being physically present at a performance. You can feel the bass vibrations in your chest.

The skill and energy is just amazing. Some of the drums are played from a "sit up" position. Those guys are machines.

First time I saw taiko, I thought it was the most metal thing I'd ever seen, and I desperately wanted to jam with them on guitar.
Sepultura then stole my idea.

Elvis' 1st Recording Digitally Transferred

lucky760 says...

Does something like this sound better because psychologically you know it's a direct recording of the singer's voice vibrated and etched onto that surface or does it actually sound better acoustically? Obviously, you'd have to ignore all the crackles.

Cycloramic iPhone app spins the phone for 360 degree photos

Chaucer says...

Yep. it vibrates to move. its very interesting when it works but it is highly unpredictable.

I heard it works best on skinny railings above large drops into rivers and such.

Does it energize and brake the vibrator thing somehow to induce rotation?
