Virtual reality, explained with some trippy optical illusion

newtboy says...

OK. Looking extremely closely and using paper to block out the image, I have to say they fudged things on some of them.
I saw two grey pills the whole time.
The colored tiles fade to grey as they "mask off" the other tiles, they start no where near the shade of grey they end up as, their color has faded a lot in the process.
The grey tiles on the floor also change shades as they are 'masked off' quite clearly. I went 1/4 speed, and also tried masking them off myself, they clearly faked this one.
I put a straight edge on the checker board and sure enough, those lines are slightly curved....just barely but they are.
The two table tops are NOT the same size at first, I measured and the vertical table is definitely longer on the long side. That one's obvious. (EDIT:I'm wrong about that)
The spinning dots does work for me, as do convex images and auditory illusions.
So I'm not ready to call 'fake' on this, but IMO it's fudged badly.

I don't get how they don't fall back on the track more often than not... especially before you get to a competitive level. Several ways... not enough jump to get past vertical and towards the mats, slipping down the pole, letting go too soon... I'd guess holding the pole too long is probably bad as well, but I'd think you'd likely still end up on the mats at least, just knock the bar off... though momentum would become an issue at some point too I'd think.

Why do mirrors flip horizontally (but not vertically)?

Sagemind says...

Seems as though she's paraphrased Feynman's video.

Instinctively, I know it's a reflection. What is closest to the plane of the mirror on one side will appear closest to the plane on the refection. We don't flip horizontal or vertically, we reflect. What is on our right stays to the right, and what is left, stays to to the left.
I love Feynman, and I can listen to him for hours. but I didn't need his discussion to understand it either.

From a scientific point of view, I suppose it's good to lay it out. A solid foundation is the best thing to build off of, and finding the words to describe seemingly abstract ideas is always a challenge. This one was easy, but I know they get harder.

Maybe not so obvious to most, as Feynmen thought it worthy of discussing and it seems pretty apparent he doesn't share your feelings.

So they consciously made a decision to shoot vertical in order to convey their intense level of fear? It's like a director deciding to use shakey cam.
I want to run them off the road too!

Too be fair, if they were shooting landscape I'd be tempted to think they weren't as scared as they claimed.
